Lower finals complete, 56 remain

Following some rather freak weather conditions which caused flooding in the centre of Buenos Aires yesterday and the cancellation of the final round of qualifying Day 7 of the 1:8 Offroad World Championships was a sunny dry affair allowing the lower finals to be run.  While local TV last night reported 115mm of rain had fallen in one hour, covering the track prior to the wet conditions appears to have been effective as along with the spreading of a lot of wood shavings after, the first of the finals got underway just after midday.

The day ended with the running of the 1/16 Finals from which 8 drivers would progress to the big day.   The first of the 20-minute encounters was the 1/16 A final which would be won by A-Main Hobbies team driver Chad Bradley who had bumped up from the previous 1/32 A final.  Bradley took his Mugen to a comfortable win, 12-seconds clear of team-mates Marty Korn and Curtis Door.  The final driver to secure his pass through to tomorrow was Portuguese Xray driver Nuno Rebelo who finished just head of former multiple finalist Richard Saxton whose event has come to an end.

In the 1/16 B Final, the last race of the day, Team Durango’s Joern Neumann took his prototype Durango to the win 7-seconds ahead of the TLR of former World Champion and AKA co-owner Mark Pavidis.  While the 2006 Champion bumped up the same race would be the end of the event for past World Champions Greg Degani and Yuichi Kanai who had bumped up from the 1/32 B Final.  The final two drivers to make up the 56 drivers who remain in the event were French Mugen driver Nicolas Reynaud who was the winner of the 1/32 final and former European Champion Dani Vega.

Manufacturer Statistics

Below are the stats for the chassis and engines being used at the 14th 1:8 Offroad World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  The figures have been made possible thanks to Bernard Durand of Novarossi and the staff at OS Speed who shared the task of physically standing in pitlane to take note of the buggy and engine used by each and every one of the 147 drivers who are taking part in the 8-day event.

In terms of chassis popularity it is Mugen, who have come to these championships with their new MBX7, who are the most popular buggy with 40 drivers or 27 percent of the entry running the Japanese company’s car.  The second most popular choice of chassis is shared between TLR and Xray who are each represented by 22 drivers followed closely by the sports most successful manufacturer & defending champions Kyosho with 20 buggies. In total there are 15 different makes of chassis being raced here this week.

In terms of engines used, Novarossi are again like the last Worlds in Thailand the most popular with a massive 28% of the entry. That’s 41 of the Italian made 3.5cc engines powering buggies around the ‘Speed Paradise’ track.  OS Speed are the second most popular choice with 21 users followed closely by RB with 20 and defending champions Orion with 16. A total of 20 different engine brands are being raced.

While data for tyres was not gathered in the pitlane, we do know from the official entry list issued by IFMAR, on which 176 entries are listed, that AKA are the most popular tyre.  The defending champion rubber is being used by approximately half the field with Proline the second most used tyre.

Final qualifier cancelled, Boots is Top Qualifer

Kyosho’s Elliott Boots has claimed the honour of Top Qualifier for the 14th 1:8 Offroad World Championship after the much anticipated and talked about heavy rain arrived over night in Argentina forcing the cancellation of the sixth & final round of qualifying.  Waking to a wet morning in Buenos Aires drivers made their way to the track in the hope that they may get to run today but shortly after 09:00 local time even more torrential rain along with thunder & lightning arrived leaving organisers little option but to cancel today’s racing.

The cancellation means qualifying has been called on each driver’s best three runs from the five rounds that did get run with Q3 & 5 pace setter Boots taking the overall TQ honours from Warm-up Race winner Robert Battle, the European set to line up on pole position for their respective Semi finals on Saturday ahead of US Champions Ty Tessmann and Jared Tebo.  Boots TQ, the 19-year becoming the first British driver to take the honour, is the second consecutive TQ for defending champions and the sports most winning manufacturer Kyosho who in Thailand topped qualifying with Tebo.

Reigning World Champion Cody King ended qualifying in 38th position and so will start out his title defence from the 1/8th finals.

Sensational Boots produces another TQ run

Kyosho’s Elliot Boots backed up his TQ run from this morning’s Q3 with a blistering performance in the penultimate round of qualifying this evening at the 1:8 World Championships in Argentina to take Q5 by a massive 13 seconds from Team Associated’s Ryan Maifield with Mugen driver Davide Tortorici third fastest.  The slowest TQ run of the five rounds due to the track having become very bumpy & unpredictable, the result puts the 19-year-old Brit top of the more qualification ranking scenario of counting 3 rounds from 5.  Officially there is one round of qualifying still to run although the weather forecast for tomorrow could very well see no action in Buenos Aires with very heavy rain expected later tonight, although that said previous rain predictions earlier in the event were to prove wrong.  Under normal circumstances 4 of 6 rounds count but to cover all eventualities race officials published both rankings with Robert Batlle provisional Top Qualifier from Boots.

Boots said his MP9 was really good adding that he is gelling more and more with the track as it gets more bumpy.  Having not done the Warm-up Race the British driver doesn’t have the same experience of the track as it deteriorates but he said on a few occasion enroute to becoming British National Champion he ran on tracks where the surface was similar to now and that this suits his driving.  Describing the track surface as like ‘the Moon’ when asked how it was for Q5, Boots said his run could have been faster but he had trouble passing Maifield who in turn had trouble passing Xray’s Renaud Savoya.  Not wanting to get caught up in with either buggies the 19-year-old with advice from his pitman Mike Craddock backed up until the pair sorted things out which he said cost him in total around 4 seconds.  Asked about Q6, Boots said he would wait to see what the rain does but should it stay dry he will run the same set-up and again using AKA’s medium compound iBeam.

Maifield said along with his ‘traffic problems’ he also made a few driver errors.  Admitting his driving was not on Boots’ pace overall he said it was a solid 10-minute run.  Switching to a yellow compound Metrix tyre from JConcepts for the run the American described the track as unpredictable but feels his RC8 could match Boots’ Kyosho if he drove it better.  Asked what his plan is for the final qualifier the 11th placed finisher at the 2010 Worlds in Thailand he said if the weather holds out he will ‘probably not change much’.

Finishing just behind fellow 2-time European Champion and Mugen driver Tortorici, the Italian is driving well in the difficult conditions, Robert Batlle ends the day at the top of the points ranking ahead of Boots when 4 of 6 is counted.  Asked about the track for Q5, the Spaniard said it was ‘destroyed’ and he drove the 10-minutes just trying to keep his MBX7 on four wheels.  Loosing time with a mistake at the double, he said they need to change their set-up for the increasingly bumpy track.  Having experienced running on the track at the warm-up where it broke up badly, Batlle who won the event said they were running the MBX7’s predecessor then and the set-up won’t directly transfer across.  Still learning how set-up changes effect the new buggy he said although he is sitting top of the ranking they need to find a little more speed.

Behind Batlle, Jared Tebo who runs in the same group as Tortorici set the 5th fastest time ahead of his Kyosho team-mate Kyle McBride. Unfortunately for defending World Champion Cody King Q5 was yet another difficult run for the American.

Elsewhere there were problems for TLR’s Dakotah Phend and A-Main Hobbies Dylan Rodriquez.  Phend only managed a single lap before his 8ight failed to turn at the end of the straight.  Confident with his buggy for the conditions on his opening lap two drivers ahead of him tangled and one of the recovering buggies pulled out in from of the 15-year-old.  The heavy impact resulted in a steering servo failure bringing an end to what was a disappointing Day 2 of qualifying, which yesterday started out so well when he took second in Q1.  With Dakotah out, the Top TLR driver for the round was fellow American JR Mitch who had his best run setting the 10th fastest time.  Second fastest in Q4, Rodriquez was also a non finisher for the round after he lost his front right shock when the corner of the carbon shock tower on his MP9 broke.

Qualifying Round 5 – Top 12

Chassis Focus – Robert Batlle

Chassis Name – Mugen MBX7
Engine – Novarossi Plus .21-4BTTS
Tires – Procircuit
Radio/Servos – Futaba
Remarks – The 2-time European Champion is running the brand new MBX-7 from Mugen and it is going very well for the Spaniard, Robert is sitting top of the qualifying list after 4 rounds. Batlle came and won the warmup race with the MBX6 back in September but those setups don’t transfer across to the new X7 so it is a steep learning curve but so far they are very happy with how the car is currently performing.
