The Worlds according to Ruona – Testing, practice or training?

We made it through a great practice day today at the worlds and so far things are looking pretty normal. The track is developing character with some bumpy places here and there and most certainly will continue. I see some drivers having trouble finding their marks out there so it’s obviously more difficult than it looks. After the 180 down the straight there is a nice hole forming and on the face of the following roller / jump. Things will only get more interesting from here. The fastest 3 laps is always a bit annoying because the qualifiers are 10…

The Worlds according to Ruona – The hand shaking phase is over

…that makes the tour, we all know who should and shouldn’t be in the race. I would have preferred to give the qualified drivers more practice than to a gimmick race. Oh well, let’s move on. In the era of social media, I don’t know what people are more proud of. Actually racing the worlds or just taking a photo showing they were at the worlds. I don’t know why we aren’t trending yet, everyone says that we should be on ESPN like those cool drones. I just want to trend. Screw ESPN, I want to be trending news on…

Wing rule causes some issue on Day 1 of WC

…rear wing. According to Gomez, who is also on the EFRA committee, EFRA had proposed a postal vote to have the rule dropped but with the ‘Race In’ event also up for a postal vote the window vote never got presented as the one of ‘Race In’ format was of much higher importance. Speaking to JConcepts’ Jason Ruona, he said they overlooked the ruling having been more focused on the maximum wing width and depth rather than the side plates but added they will now work on releasing a wing that allows for the 50x40mm race number. In terms of…

The Worlds according to Ruona – Worlds afterthoughts

…a text I got a few times after the main event. Ryan has TQed 2 IFMAR worlds and sat on Pole for 2 IFMAR worlds. He hasn’t won it yet because one of the above worlds program factors hasn’t allowed him too. I say yet because this guy isn’t going anywhere…you see him lead the semi? Drive from the pole and lead during the main? You can’t ask for much more from a driving standpoint. He qualified his highest ever at a 1/8th worlds, ran his best semi-final ever and led out over the world’s best and he’s still only…

The Worlds according to Ruona – Friday Finals

…vehicles, you have more success. More sponsors on-board. You get a few haters a long the way. He’s got everything, he’s not that good, he’s lucky. More winning. Respected people take you under their wing. You qualify for the Worlds. You are on the Worlds team! A trip to the Worlds! Your old backyard track is completely grass. Submerged in the new life, trying to make a name for yourself. You’ve made it to the Worlds. You get on the drivers stand and the nerves kick in. You are back to square one, you are back at your first “big…

The Worlds according to Ruona – Wednesday Qualifying

…shot at a TQ no matter what race you are in. As far back as 1997, at the Worlds at the Ranch Pit Shop, they were using concrete to patch the track. I saw a hole forming at the end of the straight and Gil Losi Jr (I miss him at the races BTW) started making it larger and squaring up the hole. I say to him, hey what are you doing… He says I’m going to make some clean edges and fill the hole with concrete. My mind is blown….I’m thinking…it’s a dirt track just fill it with dirt….
