Tone to tone A1 win for Coelho

sun_coelho4wd

World Champion Bruno Coelho made light work of the opening 4WD Buggy A-Main at the DHI Cup to take an easy tone to tone win over defending champion Jörn Neumann. His first year to attend the Danish event, the Top Qualifier immediately stamped his authority on the race setting the fastest lap on lap 2 with his rivals best 2/10ths of a second off. Starting from second on the grid, the morning’s 2WD Buggy winner Michal Orlowski would complete the Top 3 after two mistakes, the second letting Neumann get by him. A driver many hoped would take the challenge to Coelho, David Ronnefalk struggled to get by Orlowski retiring just after half way when his HB D413 sheered a drive shaft.

sun_bruno3

Commenting on his win Coelho said, ‘My car was perfect like always and I made no mistakes’. With little else to say about the uneventful race, the Xray driver said, ‘I hope I can repeat it in A2’.

sun_backjorn

‘I’m happy with second because I think Bruno is too fast to beat’, was Neumann’s reaction having started 4th. Describing his Serpent SX4 as feeling ‘OK’ for A2 he plans to try different diffs in the car which he said should give him better forward traction.

sun_orlowski4wd

Orlowski shared Neumann’s thoughts about Coelho pace. The 14-year-old said, ‘I tried to match Bruno but he was faster and I crashed’. After that he said he ‘tried to secure second place but crashed again’, the error with 3-laps to go dropping him behind Neumann. Planning a camber change for A2 to get better rotation from his K2 he said the goal now his an overall podium which he hopes he can lock up in A2.

Orlowski adds DHI Cup win to his CV

sun_michal2wdwin

14-year-old Michal Orlowski has added the DHI Cup to his impressive list of achievements, the Schumacher driver executing two perfect races to win 2WD Buggy at the Danish event. Taking an easy win in A1, Orlowski would again benefit from a first lap mistake by Top Qualifier Tom Cockerill in A2, and once in front the Pole was the class of the field. With Orlowski able to sit out A3, Cockerill would come good to win the leg from Niclas Månsson but it wasn’t enough for the 2014 winner to make the podium. With the Brit finishing 7th overall, it was Martin Bayer and the only multiple 2WD Champion Joern Neumann that would stand each side of Orlowski at the podium presentation.

sun_carorlo

‘Winning the DHI Cup is the perfect way to start the season’, was Orlowski’s reaction to his victory. The World Championship finalist said after a rear camber link change following the low traction condition of A1, his LRP powered KF2 SE was the best the car has been all weekend. ‘Really happy with the win’ he added ‘I have to say I got really lucky on the first lap not to hit Tom’. Once in front he said he ‘pushed to build a gap so (he) could go easy to the finish’, and that approach again ‘worked out’.

sun_martinB

‘Starting from fifth on the grid and ending up 2nd, I’m happy with that’, was how Bayer summed up his finals. 3rd in A1 and 2nd in A2, the Xray driver said A3 was ‘crazy’. ‘I passed Joern (Neumann, who started fourth) but then everyone came together and I dropped to the back so the race was done’. Only 8th overall last year, the Czech driver said finishing on the podium was ‘a good start to the new season’.

sun_neumann2

Maintaining his run of podium finishes every year at the DHI Cup since offroad was introduced in 2012, Neumann said, ‘It is my first big race podium in a year so I’m happy’. The Serpent driver continued, ‘I’m happy to make the podium but I’m also a little disappointed as I could have got second with a clean race in A3’. He was particularly happy with his A2 race. After getting caught up in Cockerill’s crash and dropping to the back he would recover to 3rd saying ‘the car was pretty good’. In A3 the German described the race as ‘really aggressive’. In a reference to his contact with Bayer, he said ‘you can’t win the race at the second corner’. He was also unhappy with Bayer’s team-mate Bruno Coelho feeling his battle with the Portuguese driver a few laps later was ‘not a clean fight’.

sun_tommy

‘An expert demonstration in how to throw away a TQ’ that was how Cockerill described his day. After rolling out of the lead in A1, in A2 he would get the back section wrong on the opening with his Yokomo popping a ball cup in the resulting clashes as the field streamed through. In A3 again it was not a great first lap as the No.3 starting Team Associated of Niclas Månsson jumped over the YZ-2 on the first jump of the back section after Cockerill ran too tight a line into the section and couldn’t commit to the jump. Behind the Swede, Cockerill said he waited for a mistake from the new leader and that would come just as the race reached half distance. A3 would mark a good race for Dane Jesper Rasmussen, the Associated driver going from 10th on the grid to finish 3rd which would give him fifth overall behind Månsson.

Volker takes easy A1 win at DHI Cup

sun_ronaldA1

Ronald Volker claimed an easy win in the opening A-Main at the DHI Cup this morning in Denmark. The Top Qualifier and reigning champion lead from start to finish with an anticipated challenge from Awesomatix driver Viljami Kutvonen failing to materialise. In the end, after a late roll by Kutvonen, Volker’s Yokomo would win by over 4-seconds with Xray’s Bruno Coelho a distant third.

sun_volker

‘A good start to the day’ was how Volker summed up his win. Chasing his 3rd consecutive win at the famous Odense event, which he has won 6 times, Volker said while his LRP powered BD7 was ‘a little loose’ it was ‘the same for the entire run so it was predictable so it was not an issue’. Pushing hard at the start so as to try break away from the pack he said once he got the gap to around 1-second he was able to drive a controlled race. Coming up on a group of traffic, he said it wasnt a problem as at the same time Kutvonen had his roll so there was no pressure to force the issue with the group of battling cars, all driving being well informed of Volker’s presence by the race referee. Planning no set-up changes for A2, Volker said he will try to repeat his A1 strategy of trying to making an early break.

sun_kutvonen

Summing up his race Kutvonen said it was ‘Not perfect, I lost too much time over the first minute’. Setting the fastest lap of the race as he put on a push to try make back the time but he said the gap was too much and his recovery attempts lead to his roll which lost him over 2-seconds. Looking to A2, the Finn said ‘I guess I’ll have to win the next two finals’. In terms of his A800, he said he will do his tyre prep ‘slightly different’ with a view to having better pace early in the race.

sun_brunooo

Putting a completely different set-up on his car for A1, which he said made little difference, fifth place starter Coelho said his result was only possible because Adrian Berntsen made contact with Alexander Hagberg, both having started ahead of him. The Portuguese driver is putting his lack of pace on his DHI Cup debut down to a bad set of tyres. Coelho’s team-mate Hagberg would finish 4th ahead of another of Xray’s drivers Marek Cerny. The Swede said, ‘Berntsen hit me and I flipped. And I was too slow to catch up’. After the contact Berntsen would fall to the back of the field, the Gizmo driver finishing last behind Meen Vejrak.

sun_benson

In Super Stock, Top Qualifier Tim Benson took an easy win with his new Kyosho TF-7. Behind the German the big battle was between Xray’s reigning champion Marek Cerny and Jan Ratheisky for second. Cerny would see off the challenge of his team-mate, finishing 1-second off the leader.

Orlowski cruises to A1 win

sun_orloneu

Michal Orlowski cruised an easy 6-seconds win in the opening 2WD A-Main at the DHI Cup this morning. Starting from second in the grid, the Schumacher driver went to the front on the opening lap after an error by Top Qualifier Tom  Cockerill on the first run down the main straight and quickly pulled clear of the field.  Behind Orlowski the main battle for the first half of the race was between Xray’s Martin Bayer and Team Associated’s Joakim Nicolaisen with Serpent’s Joern Neumann in close pursuit. With Bayer & Nicolaisen tripping up it was Neumann who was the benefactor, the German going on to finish second 8/10ths in front of Bayer.

sun_michalA1

With a smile Orlowski described A1 as ‘a nice morning run’. The Polish ace said after yesterday’s 4WD qualifying on the track he expected traction would be low but it turned out to be ‘much, much lower’. Leaving his car unchanged from 2WD qualifying he said with the low traction it was difficult to drive but with everyone else caught out by the conditions he was able to drive a safe race and encouraged by how easy he was able to build up a gap over his rivals. Expecting everyone to be better prepared for the conditions in A2, the 14-year-old said he will make a small change to his KF2 SE going from 1 to 1.5mm of rear camber.

sun_carcockerill

‘The car had zero grip’ that was Cockerill’s reaction. So bad was the traction after just a few warm-up laps the British driver raced back to his pits to change tyres thinking the problem was a bad set of tyres. The 2014 Champion said the only change he made to the car was to tighten all the screws and he will loosen them for A2. Commenting on his roll on the straight he said ,’I just clipped a dot coming onto the straight’. Recovering to 5th, further mistakes would see him finish 9th.

sun_jorn

Another driver surprised by the lack of grip, fourth place starter Neumann said once he got by Bayer & Nicolaisen and pulled a gap he just kept it safe saying Orlowski was ‘too far gone to catch’. For the second final, the former two time champion will make a shock change to his 2WD modified SX4.

Coelho takes overall 4WD TQ honours at DHI Cup

sat_brunotq

Bruno Coelho has claimed the overall TQ honours in 4WD Buggy at the DHI Cup.  The World Champion’s first time to attend the famous Danish event, the Xray driver became the Top Qualifier despite pulling a corner off his XB4 into Q4 but it was the opening lap that would decide the outcome.  Going into the fourth & final round, it was a two way battle between Coelho and David Ronnefalk for pole position, Coelho having the advantage of two TQ runs to his credit. On their first lap however both drivers would make simultaneous mistake one corner apart, Ronnefalk coming off the worst.  Recovering, having lost on 9/10ths rather than the 4 second lost by the Swede, Coelho would take up the TQ pace after 3-laps looking on target to claim the TQ in style.  However with less than a minute to go he would jump the back section wrong sending his car crashing into the side of a jump in the opposite direction and into instant retirement.  It was to make no difference however as further mistakes by Ronnefalk meant the HB driver would end up P7 with Michal Orlowski the big benefactor getting the TQ time for the round.  The result means the Schumacher driver starts 2nd in between Coelho and Ronnefalk.

sat_brunoq4

‘Big mistake, too much throtte’, that was Coelho’s reaction to the incident.  He continued that with the extra throttle input ‘the rear got loose and it jumped sideways’ sending it crashing into the side of the opposite lane jump.  Despite his error,  Coelho was happy to be starting at the front of tomorrow’s grid saying ‘the car is amazing’ so apart from replacing the damaged corner the plan is to ‘drive easy and make no mistakes’.

sat_michalback

‘I’d prefer to be starting third rather than second’ was Orlowski’s reaction to the outcome being gifted the final TQ brought.  The European Champion said while his improved car has ‘pace for a podium for sure’ he added ‘Bruno and David are faster than me’.  Running new tyres in the final qualifier he said in the beginning he was ‘pretty slow’ but as the car felt better he was able to run 2nd behind Coelho, a position he was happy with as he would secure him P3 on the grid ‘but then Bruno crashed’.

sat_ronnefalkq4

With the fastest lap of Q4, Ronnefalk said, ‘its not good to crash at the beginning’.  With the race marking his first full season with HB, he said ‘it a pity I lost out to Orlowski on the grid but my car feels really good so its game on for the finals’.  Running new tyres in the final qualifier, last year’s third place finisher is confident between this set and another he ran in earlier that everything should be fine in that department and that it is going to comedown to him delivering through his driving.

sat_jorn3

Having enjoy a four year reign in 4WD, Neumann will make his title defence from fourth on the grid. The Serpent driver said ‘I got a 2, 2 ,3 & 4 and I end up with fourth on the grid’.  Describing his Orion powered SX4 as ‘easy to drive  but lacking steering’ he added with it having been OK in Q1 & 2 (he is) not sure why its not as good now’.  Set to cut less pins off his front tyres for the opening final to get more steering, the German said ‘I will go for the win of course but a podium would be good’.  Describing the front of the field in terms of pace as ‘pretty close’ he said while ‘Bruno is faster he crashes’ so nothing is a foregone conclusion. Starting behind Neumann and completing the top half of the grid will be Martin Bayer, last year’s runner-up.  In the final qualifier the Czech ace showed strong running on the TQ pace before a mistake with 2-minutes to go.

sat_karlsencar

One stand out performance of the event is that of Malin Karlsen, the ever impressive 10-year-old booking her place in the A-Main.  The talented Norwegian would conclude a great qualifying run with a P5 in Q4 to secure her ORCA powered Xray 8th on the grid behind Yokomos of 2WD Top Qualifier Tom Cockerill and Danish teenager Frederik Hovgaard.

Kutvonen takes final qualifier

sat_viljami2

Viljami Kutvonen has TQ’d the final round of qualifying at the DHI Cup.  The result secures the Awesomatix driver 2nd on the grid behind Top Qualifier Ronald Volker, the defending champion having wrapped up pole position with a third TQ run in the previous round.  While Volker would make two mistakes as he used Q4 to test a set-up for the finals, Kutvonen topped the times posting the second fastest time of qualifying with a 6/10ths of a second advantage over Alexander Hagberg.  Hagberg as a result will start tomorrow’s three A-Main encounters from third on the grid ahead of 2013 Champion Adrian Berntsen.  Making the trip to the famous Danish event for the first time, a somewhat frustrated Bruno Coelho completes the top half of the grid.

sat_kuthag

‘It was good, just liked I planned it’, that was Kutvonen’s response to delivering a TQ run.  The 2014 runner-up said reverting back to his Q2 set-up along with running stiffer flex settings on his LRP powered A800 left the car ‘unbelievably good’. Planning to leave the car unchanged for A1, the Finnish driver is confident ‘the car is good enough to battle with Ronald tomorrow’ for the win.

sat_ronalecvil

Commenting on what was essentially a 5-minute test for the finals, Volker said the changes made to his BD7 ‘made it very easy to drive’ but the car suffered from understeer.  Catching a dot sending the car into a roll just after the first minute mark, Volker said he then drove over the limit trying to make back the time.  Getting back on the TQ pace with the fastest lap of the weekend he would make a second mistake with four laps to go leaving him to end up P3. Looking to the finals, he will go back to his Q3 set-up.

sat_hagberg3

‘I thought I drove really well but I was still slightly off the pace’, was Hagberg’s reaction to performance, Q4 his fastest qualifier.  The Xray driver said, ‘Ronald and Viljami have faster cars and we have to find something for tomorrow if we are going to be able to compete with them in the finals’.

sat_backadrian

Having shown promise in practice when he debuted new Danish manufacturer Gizmo’s GZ-1 at the ETS season opener in December, Adrian Berntsen gave the team reason to celebrate as he secured 4th on the grid.  One of the company’s co-founders Martin Lissau, a former 1:5 World Champion, said they were ‘very happy’ to be so well placed on the DHI Cup A-Main grid with the result showing they have a good idea in the car design.  The Dane went on to explain that the high traction this weekend is not something they have been able to experience before so it has added to the learning curve.  Asked about Berntsen’s final qualifier he said fitting a new bearing set from a different manufacturer to the car for the heat they tightened up as the race went on slowing their star driver. With Steen Graversen making up arm set-up changes to the car prior to bearing issue Berntsen was ‘quite happy’ with the feeling of the car.

sat_brunoo

A driver who many expected to put Volker’s quest for a 7th DHI Cup under treat this weekend, Coelho himself was miffed by his lack of pace.  Having tried three different bodyshells, the set-up of Hagberg, Cerny and Hudy but with no improvement the World Championship runner-up said the problem had to be down to a bad set of tyres.  While drivers get two sets of tyres for the weekend, Coelho said the tyres improve with each run and while he has a second set they are not going to solve his problems as they have no running on them and are there going to be even slower.  He said while his T4 is drivable it has no traction compared to his rivals.  Starting behind Coelho will be Xray team-mate Marek Cerny followed by Yokomo’s Meen Vejrak. The grid is completed by Serpent’s Marc Fischer, Schumacher’s Elliot Harper and young Japanese talent Naoki Akiyama.  Former Champion, his 2008 win launching his international racing career, Viktor Wilck finds himself with the unenviable BQ honours at this year’s event.

sat_timTQ

In Super Stock, Kyosho driver Tim Benson gave the Japanese manufacturer’s new TF7 it first international race honour.  Debuting the car at the ETS season opener but the event proving ‘tough’, in Odense the German was on the pace from the start setting the pace in practice.  Carrying that through to qualifying he would TQ’d the opening qualifier but TQ runs for Xray’s Jan Ratheisky and Marek Cerny in Q2 & 3, meant it was all to play for in the final round.  Recovering from his set backs in the 2nd & 3rd round, Benson would deliver in style in the final round to TQ with the only 23-lap run of the weekend. Behind Benson, it is reigning champion Cerny who will start second followed by 2015 podium finishers Ratheisky and Mike Gosvig.  Awesomatix driver Tony Streit completes the Top 5 line-up.
