Wins for Cavalieri, Evans & Martin as Reedy Race moves to 4WD

The first round of 4WD at the Reedy Race of Champions saw Ryan Cavalieri, Dustin Evans and Lee Martin get the second half of the event off to the perfect start as they each secured relatively easy wins in their respective races at West Coast RC Raceway in California. Winning the opening race of the round, Cavalieri’s win brings his tally of victories to five and sees the former Champion maintain his lead at the top of the points standings. For Evans and Martin, who started from pole and took tone to tone wins, the result marks their second win at the 19th edition of the race Mike Reedy originally created in 1986 to celebrate his birthday.

Starting from 4th on the gird, Cavalieri took just 6 laps to find his way to the front taking the win by almost 4-seconds from early leader & pole starter Tanner Denney with TLR’s Dakotah Phend coming through from 6th to complete the Top 3.  Having opened the event with a win in his first 2WD race, the 2009 Champion said once he got out into the lead he ‘backed it down a little’ so as to avoid making any mistakes.  Having had two bad results in the closing rounds of 2WD, Cavalieri said it was good to start the second half of the event off with a win.

Cruising to victory by almost 8.5 seconds over Associated’s Josh Numann, Evans said it was much better starting up front. Having done well in 2WD starting further down the grid, the 2011 Champion said he needed to take full advantage of starting up front adding that he was ‘super happy’ with how his XXX-4 is working on the track.  Once he had established a lead, he said he was able to adapt a smooth driving style which proved to be quick and with a number of front row starts to come he is confident he can have a good go at trying to claim a second Reedy Race title, something which has only been achieved before by four drivers.

Running in the same race as Evans, defending champion Joern Neumann came away with third for the round a result the Team Durango driver was not happy with.  Caught up in crash on the opening lap that dropped him to the back of the field, he said his DEX410 was very fast, a fact highlighted by his fastest lap of the entire round, adding that it was capable of a lot more.

Race 3 was to be the closest affair of the first Round with Atsushi Hara getting to within 1.7 seconds of Martin’s Tamiya.  Describing his TRF502 as feeling a ‘little loose’, the British ace said afterwards he knew the Japanese legend was closing him in but he also knew he had enough in hand to control the race to the finish.  Believing that the diffs were the reason for his buggy not working as well as he would have liked he plans to build new ones which he hopes he can fit in time for his next race which will bring Day 2 of racing to a close.  If he doesn’t get it down he said he will definitely have them fitted for tomorrow’s final day of action.

Hara said he didn’t drive very well in the opening laps as he was still driving like it was 2WD but once he found his 4WD rhythm he was very happy with his pace. Using the same Durango that HB team-mate Shin Adachi used to contest the Japanese Nationals, he said he has done little to the set-up.  Describing the DEX410 as ‘super fast’ he said it was also ‘super aggressive’ but describing Round 1 of 4WD as a practice run he is confident he will be able to deliver some good results.

Maifield wins exciting final RROC 2WD encounter

The sixth & final round of 2WD at the Reedy Race of Champions produced the most exciting encounter yet with a race that saw Team Associated’s Ryan Maifield snatch the win from HB’s Ty Tessman on the last lap, the Canadian also getting passed the No.10 starting TLR of Dustin Evans in the final dash to the finish.  In the other two races Team Durango’s Ryan Lutz and TLR’s Mike Truhe claimed their first wins of the event which after 18 races using 2WD buggies will now switch over to 4WD.

Race 1 of the round saw pole position starter Neil Cragg lead away the field with fellow front row starter Lutz in close pursuit.  The American soon found a way passed the British driver when his B4.2 ran wide but later in the same lap he went back to the front following an error from Lutz.  Once in front Cragg looked to have control of the race but with just over a minute to go the former World Champion got it wrong a number of times allowing Lutz to come through for his first win. Taking wins in Rounds 3 & 5 Steven Harston completed the Top 3 benefiting from a rough last lap from TLR’s Matt Castellano.

Packing the strongest line-up of the round with Maifield, Jared Tebo, Evans and Atsushi Hara among the 10 starters, race 2 was lead away by Tessmann who took early control of the proceedings, initially leading from last year’s Reedy Race 2WD Open class winner Chad Due.  Behind however the cream of the electric offroad scene was working its way to the top.  In a rather forceful move on Due, Maifield who started 6th had worked his way up to second by lap 4 with Tebo and the No.10 starting Evans in toe. A series of wide landings by Tessmann off the whoop section allowed Maifield to close the gap to the lead B4.2.  On the final lap Tessmann again ran wide and Maifield was there to pounce but having led the majority of his previous race Tessmann was not going to give it up that easy making a lunge back at the American in the next corner. The pair came together and as a result had to single single the double coming onto the main straight allowing Evans to join the drag race to the finish, Maifield taking it by 8/100th from Evans with Tessmann having to once again settle for third a further 3/10th behind.

Bringing the 2WD action to a close, Mike Truhe won Race 3 from pole position after seeing off a challenge from Travis Amezcua who after a couple of crashes would fall back to finish 4th.  Just over a second behind Truhe’s TLR22, Associated’s Josh Numan finished second with the No.8 starting Associated of Brent Thielke finishing third.

The final round of 2WD was a tough one for current standings leader Ryan Cavalieri the World Champion has a tough run in Race 1, only managing to finish 8th in the nine car encounter.  The round is also set to be defending Champion Joern Neumann’s dropped score as starting from 10th on the grid in Race 3 he could only cross the line in 6th.

Evans claims first win in Round 5

2011 Reedy Race Champion Dustin Evans claim his and Team Losi Racing’s first win of this year’s event winning the most entertaining race of what was an otherwise uneventful 5th round of racing.  The other two races saw Kyosho’s Jared Tebo and Associated’s Steven Harston become the only drivers thus far to join Ryan Cavalieri as a multi winner at the 19th running of the famous event.  Achieving the perfect result yesterday with four wins from four races, 2009 Champion Cavalieri could not keep up his 100% winning run. Starting from the back of the grid and needing to be marshaled on the opening lap he did well to come away with 4th.

The first race to get Day 2 of racing at the Reedy Offroad Race of Champions underway, and the race with the biggest hitters this round, was to turn out to be a pretty easy affair for Tebo who benefited from an early coming together at the end of the straight between pole starter Tanner Denney and defending champion Joern Neumann.  Neumann who would go onto to finish 2nd just ahead of Associated’s Ryan Maifield while Tanner ended up back in 8th position.

With no pole sitter for race 2, which due to the 29 entries was the 9 car race, Ty Tessmann looked like he might claim his first win as he led away from the No.2 spot on the grid.  Leading for 11 of the 15 laps a mistake by the Canadian allowed his HB/HPI Racing team-mate Atsushi Hara to go to the front but on the last lap the Japanese star too made a mistake on the last lap.  This allowed Evans to come through to take the win with the two HB drivers throwing their respective Kyosho and Associated buggies across the line for the runners up spot. Hara getting it by 15/100th from Tessmann.

Race 3 was looking processional with Hartson leading TLR’s Mike Truhe but a mistake by the pole starter allowed the latter to take over the lead.  It was short lived however as a mistake by Truhe allowed Harston to go back to the front and claim his second win of the event.  Starting 3rd Josh Numan completed the Top 3.
