Dusty start to 1:8 Offroad Euros

There was a very dusty start to 32nd running of the 1:8 Offroad European Championships as drivers took to the Fehring track in Austria today for the first of two free practice runs that make up the opening day’s action for the 5 day event.  Forced to abandon the Main final at the Warm-up event back in April due to rain, conditions this time round are extremely dry with a constant cloud of dust hanging over the track.  Having also hosted the 1:10 Electric Offroad European Championships just over 3-weeks ago, drivers who competed at those championship said brushes where left at each marshaling post so as the track could be cleaned after each run and this worked well and they are cant see why the same process could not be used this week.  Instead the plan for now is to water the track at the end of each night but having been watered last night by the local fire brigade the hot conditions will most likely see any benefit quickly evaporate.

Situated in beautiful countryside in the South East of Austria not far from the borders of Hungary and Slovenia, the track venue itself is an impressive set-up and bucking the trend of many of this year’s European Championships the event has attracted a full 180 capacity entry. One driver to fall fowl of the size of the entry is Team Durango’s Hupo Honigl who like Mugen’s Lee Martin came to the event in the hope of getting one of the reallocation places made once no-shows have been confirmed.  Martin was assured of his place when fellow British racer Craig Drescher was forced to pull out on the eve of the event but Honigl, who races under a German EFRA license and had his pit area all set up to go racing, failed to secure an entry despite him being one of Austria’s most successful international offroad racers. Honigl will stay on at the event and act as mechanic for team mate Joern Neumann, wiiner of the 4WD EP Euros here, who is driving a hand machined prototype Durango buggy.

Sporting a bandage on his left arm following an operation to correct a problem with a muscle that was causing him to lose feeling in his figures, Robert Batlle is very confident about the days ahead as the defending champion seeks to join the rather exclusive club of 3-time European Champions, the only two drivers to be able to lay claim to such an achievement being his great rival Renaud Savoya and fellow Mugen driver Daniel Reckward who was 3rd at last year’s event.  Describing the opening practice as a ‘systems check’ the Spaniard, who was declared the winner of the Warm-up Race, said based on the information gathered at the Warm-up his equipment is up for the job and it is now down to just getting on with the program but added there are 8-10 guys that have just as much a chance at the title as he has.  Expecting much tougher competition this year from Savoya, whom he replaced at Mugen when the French ace switched to Durango, he said with the three time consecutive European Champion now with Xray he is a serious contender for the win.  Regarding other contenders Batlle said newly crowned British Champion Elliot Boots is one driver who has come on a lot in the past 12 months and he will be one to watch.

Having failed to make the final at the Euros last year for the first time since 2005, dropping out in the 1/4 finals with a broken steering servo, Savoya said he has put that ‘nightmare’ firmly behind him and feels he has never been more confident than he is now even when he was on a run of 3 title wins with Mugen.  Quickly building a strong relationship with Xray he said they listen to his input and this has really helped with the development of the XB9.  Forced to run harder Sweep tyres than he wants as his box of tyres for the event have not yet arrived at the track, he said his buggy was overall easy to drive with the triple and corner jump the two areas he will focus on in the next practice as he would like to get the car to settle faster.

Also driving for Team Durango last year but putting his DNX408 into the Main final, Boots is now part of a strong Kyosho line up which also includes last year’s Top Qualifier & Runner up Jerome Aigoin and fast Swede David Ronnefalk.  The 19-year-old, who has dominated this year’s British National Championship wrapping up the title with one round still left to run, said he is really happy to be back driving Kyosho and that the MP9 suits his ‘aggressive balls out’ driving style.

One very noticeable thing in the pits here in Austria is the large manufacturer presence with a number of key American’s over to support their drivers.  One of 1:8 offroad racing’s best known divers, Adam Drake is over together with TLR team manager Kevin Gahan to support their main title hopefuls Darren Bloomfield, who is actually running one of Drakes own buggies, and Miguel Matias along with last year’s fourth place finisher Marcel Guske who just recently signed for TLR Germany from Mugen.  Richard Saxton is on hand to assist Team Associated which is headed up by Neil Cragg and Yannick Aigoin.  Aigoin is the last driver to win the title before the great Batlle/Savoya rivalry began when the French driver took the title for Xray in 2006.  As part of his move to Associated, Aigoin has been involved in developing the US brand’s presence in the French market which particularly earlier in the year left him with no time to devote himself to just driving but added since May he has been able to practice more and this has boosted confidence and understanding of the RC8.2.

Pietsch & Wischnewski win at Hockenheimring

Pre-event favourites Robert Pietsch and Dirk Wischnewski claim victory at the European Nitro Challenge in Germany but had to work hard for the success in their respective finals in which the Top 2 where separated by less then 4 seconds after 45-minutes of hard racing at the Hockenheimring track.  Top Qualifier in 1:8, Pietsch took his Mugen to a 3.45-secs win over Alberto Picco with Oliver Mack third while in the 1:10 Touring Cars Wischnewski, who started second, had a 3.93-secs winning margin over Mark Green with Daniele Ielasi completing the podium.

The first of the two main finals saw some confusion among the drivers, after the race started, when the timing screens showed the race distance as 45 minutes and not the 40 as published on the timetable.  Apparently the change to 45-minutes was made last night after it was realised that this was what was printed in the information given for the race but with no updated schedule printed all the drivers made preparation for 40-minutes.  Wischnewski said after the 10-minute lunch time practice session for the Top 4 qualifiers that he based all his calculations on the race being 40-minutes, but in the end extra 5-minutes didn’t effect his race too much as tyre wear today turned out to be a lot less than yesterday.  Having had overnight rain on the previous two days of the event, which washed away any build up of traction, Saturday night stayed dry making for much improved track conditions in the finals.

Starting from pole position and making his race debut for Capricorn, Eric Dankel looked to be well in control of proceedings but as the race reached 3/4 way distance his Novarossi flamed out coming off the end of the main straight.  Firing up immediately when they got the car back to the pits, the German said it was very unusual as normally a flame out results in a broken plug and the tank still had plenty of fuel as he only pitted 2-minutes earlier.  Scheduled to run more stops than Wischnewski, who was stopping every 5-minutes compared with his 4:30, Dankel said even with this he believes he would have still taken the win by around 2 seconds.  Disappointed, he said he had to look at the positives of his first nitro race of the season as he showed both he and the Capricorn are competitive.

Having TQ’d last year but suffered similar faith to Dankel when he his engine dropped a glow plug, Wischnewsk said this year his Orcan engine worked perfectly and he was very happy to take the win. Collecting the car of outgoing champion Patrick Schafer when the Shepherd boss flipped his Velox V10 coming onto the start, the 2009 European Champion said his Xray NT1 felt tweaked and so it was a difficult race.

Finding himself last after the opening lap Ielasi was very happy to recover to finish on the podium.  The Italian said he wanted to make a clean start from 4th on the grid but said some of the drivers had other ideas. Getting ‘knocked’ around on lap one the contact caused his brake linkage to come undone leaving him to run the race without brakes.  In this World Championship year, the 2008 Champion said he was very happy with the performance of the Velox V10 which he said they have improved considerably in the last 12 months.

Making his international race debut with Serpent’s new 747 chassis, Green came very close to taking the win.  The former Worlds finalist took the lead of the race when Dankel flamed out but suffered an unusual incident of his own at also the same spot.  On lap 116 having come off the straight his car came to a stop and he thought he ran out of fuel but throttling the car it started to move again.  Making his way to the pits to have the car checked over everything was OK and he rejoined the race. Losing about 6 seconds, the British ace believes something must have got caught in the drive train.  Overall Green was delighted with the performance of the new car saying he never saw such large diameter tyres on a 200m car at the start of the race but it did not hamper the performance in any way as highlighted by him recording the fastest lap of the race.  Having expected to see tyre changes during the race in the end none of the 10 drivers did so.

In 1:8, where drivers did not have the same confusion over the length of the race, Pietsch admitted afterwards that taking the win was a lot tougher than he was expecting.  Having predicted after qualifying that Picco would be the biggest treat, the Italian kept the pressure on the German right until the final pit stop.  Running one more stop, Pietsch swapped the lead with Picco on a number of occasions and it was only when Pietsch made his final and extra stop, coming out ahead of Picco, that he knew he had the win.  Having suffered a plug failure last year the Mugen designer was happy to have a problem free race.

His first time at the European Nitro Challenge Picco appeared a little disappointed after the race saying he lost the race at the beginning.  Starting from 3rd on the grid on lap 3 he flipped his Picco Torque powered Mugen upside down after making contact with the rear of another car and needed marshalling losing him 7 seconds.  One of the greats of 1:8 Onroad racing, he joked that it is for this reason that he keeps telling his pitman & brother Edoardo he must take up tennis so he will be faster in future!  Very happy with the performance of his self modified MRX 4.5, which set the second fastest lap of the race, he said following his tyre stop the car was a little more difficult to drive than usual and took about three minutes to come in.

Factory Shepherd/Picco driver Mack was happy to be on the podium but at the same time disappointed after having been able to run with Piestch in the opening stages of the race.  The German said ultimately three big mistakes of his own doing cost him any chance of victory.  Suffering with his engine going rich during the race he eventually finished 4 laps down.  For outgoing champion Michael Salven two plug failures resulted in retirement with 1:30 to go.  The Serpent designer, who was holding third at one stage, said his 966 had a lot more steering than he normally runs and this caused him to make too many mistakes.

In the Hobby Cup classes the Top Qualifiers both took dominant victories with Bernd Hasselbring taking his Xray to victory over Alex Kempe in the Touring Car class while Jurgen Bahr also enjoyed a 3-lap winning margin in 1:8 ahead of Dutch racer Pili Luigi.

Created by Shepherd but attracting backing from fellow chassis manufacturers Serpent, Mugen &  Motonica, engine companies Picco & Sonic along with LRP and Matrix tyres the second running of the European Nitro Challenge has been a huge success and the feedback from competitors is that the event will be even bigger and better next year.  This is a positive for onroad nitro racing which is in need of a boost. Red RC’s first time at the event we are already very much looking forward to coming back to bring you coverage of the 2013 European Nitro Challenge.

Defending 1:8 Champion Salven bumps up from Semi Finals

Defending European Nitro Challenge Champion Michael Salven has made it through from the Semis with ‘Mr Serpent’ set to line-up 7th on the grid.  Running in the second of the 20-minute finals Salven finished second to fellow 966 driver Merlin Depta who started from pole position in what was to be the fastest winning time of the Semis securing him 5th on the grid, the same position he was at at the end of yesterday’s three rounds of qualifying.

A good afternoon for Serpent, current 40+ European Champion Andreas Giesa won the first of the Semis ahead of Toni Gruber meaning four 966 chassis will line up on the grid.  Unfortunately for factory Shepherd driver Marco Muller an engine failure while leading the Semi B means the Swiss Champion will play no further part in event. Making the grid due to their race times Mugen driver Nicolai Bahr starts 9th having come from the Semi A while fellow MRX5 driver Thilo Todtman bumps up from the Semi B to complete the grid for this evenings Main final.

Touring Car Semi Finals Update

The 6 drivers to join the Top 4 direct qualifiers in the 40-minute Main of the Touring Car class at the European Nitro Challenge has been decided with the running of the 20-minute Semis at the Hockenheimring, Germany.  First up was the B Semi which was won by the Shepherd of Patrick Nahr from the Serpent of Sweden’s Mikael Fransson who started on pole.  With the Top 2 from each Semi bumping up and the final two spots on the grid for the big event being determined on next two fastest race times it was Sebastian Kunz and Andreas Weyhoven, who both ran in the first Semi, that secured the 9th and 10th starting positions.  It was a good morning for the Xray driver Weyhoven who after qualifying 20th yesterday has worked his way into the Main from the 1/4 finals.

In the second of the finals, the Semi A, there was terrible luck for Kyosho driver Dominic Greiner who was on target to take the win and progress to the Main but on lap 35 of 57 he crashed into a marshal which resulted in a track rod popping off.  Able to fix the car, with over a minute lost the race was effectively over for the 18-year-old.  Greiner’s demise moved former World Championship Top Qualifier Francesco Tironi into the lead but the factory Capricorn driver saw his race ended when his car broke after collecting a stranded car at the chicane.  In the end Serpent driver Rene Pupke took the win which puts him 5th on the grid as he had the fastest winning time of both Semis while defending Champion Patrick Schafer claimed second to put his Shepherd 8th on the grid for this evening’s final.

Grid for 1:10 Touring Car Main Final

Dankel & Pietsch Top Qualifiers at Hockenheim

Eric Dankel and Robert Pietsch are Top Qualifiers at the second running of the annual European Nitro Challenge at the Hockenhiemring in Germany. Dankel pulled off a superb final qualifying heat to secure the Touring Car pole position on his debut for Italian manufacturer Capricorn, a result that was all the more impressive as it is the German’s first nitro outing of 2012. Securing pole in 1:8, the result is a repeat of Pietsch’s qualifying performance 12 months ago at the event which take place within the grounds of the home of the full size German F1 Grand Prix.

Focusing on electric touring cars this season, where he is a team driver for Yokomo, Dankel was delighted with the result saying it was the perfect way to start his new relationship with Capricorn. Overdriving the opening three laps of his final heat he said once he settled down his car felt really good and he knew that the overall TQ was there for the taking. In the end he shaved over a second off the Q2 provisional pole time of Serpent’s Mark Green and knocked a massive 6 seconds off his own previous best over the 7-minutes. Expecting tyres to be a big factor in determining the outcome of the 40-minute Main,  the Top 4 qualifiers will have their own practice session tomorrow during the lunch break in which the former German National Champion will evaluate which tyres to run and make his decision on whether he will change tyres on just one side of his car or all four, the former option saving valuable time in the pits.

Last year’s pole sitter, but suffering a glow plug failure in the final, Dirk Wischnewski will this year start second but the Xray driver is not happy with the performance of his car. Good at the start of the run he said his NT1 gets very loose in the latter part and while the final is going to be different to a qualifying run he said he needs to find a better set-up if he is to be in with a chance for the win tomorrow. Planning to try a different set-up in the warm-up, he added that one encouraging thing to come from Q3 was the pit stop carried out Robert Pietsch, who is standing in for Bertram Kessler who is away on holidays, which he said was very fast. Also planning a tyre stop in the final, Wischnewski said he hopes Pietsch is also quick with changing tyres.

Experiencing traffic in Q3 and having to drive a full circle at the timing loop when his Serpent missed it after being punted off the track by another car, Mark Green was very content with his day as he secured third on the grid. The British driver who was provisional TQ after the second round of heats said he has ‘as good a chance as anybody to win’ but in terms of tyre wear may have a slight advantage over his rivals. Very much a testing event for the new 747, he said the car handles the transition from big to small tyres very well.

Retiring from Q3 while on a TQ run after a driver error lead to a chunked tyre, Daniele Ielasi said his Sonic engined Shepherd feels really good but choosing what tyre to use is his biggest challenge for the final. Planning to run a super hard compound in the 10 minute warm-up which the Top 4 direct qualifiers get, the 2008 World Champion said the danger is due to the low traction even on soft tyres the hard tyres could wear even faster as the car slides around even more.

In 1:8 it would be hard to bet against Robert Pietsch not winning tomorrow but the Mugen designer said the dots could be his down fall. Having been caught out by them in Q2, the World Champion said his plan is just to drive a steady and clean race. Asked who he sees as the biggest treat tomorrow the World Champion said it would come from Alberto Picco as the Italian has vast experience of how to drive a well calculated main.

Picco, who starts third, is still not happy with the set-up on his self modified Mugen. Planning to use the warm-up to fine tune the car he said it is easy to drive which is very important on this track but is still lacking steering and this is costing him the performance he needs to take the battle to Pietsch.

Confirmed as joining Pietsch & Picco on the grid will the Shepherd’s of Oliver Mack and Lars Hoppe, the latter putting in a great final qualifier to push Serpent’s Merlin Depta back to fifth meaning he will have to now work his way through from the Semi Finals in which he will start from pole. Fellow Serpent driver Andreas Giesa will start from pole in the other Semi having qualified 6th just in front of defending Champion Michael Salven who finally got a full run in, setting the seventh fastest time.

In the Hobby Cup class, in which all drivers must use a controlled Sonic engine, qualifying was dominated by 1989 1:8 Formula European Champion Jurgen Bahr and 2011 40+ European Champion Bernd Hasselbring who each topped all three of their respective 1:8 and 1:10 qualifying heats to secure pole position for tomorrow’s finals. Before then all the competitors at the 2012 European Nitro Challenge will attend a banquet at the official event hotel over looking the main straight of the actual Hockenheim Grand Prix, the perfect venue for them to discuss strategies over some food and one or two drinks!!

Green fastest in Q2

Making his international race debut with Serpent’s new 747, British ace Mark Green has moved into the provisional TQ spot at the European Nitro Challenge after bettering Eric Dankel’s Q1 time around the Hockenheimring track with Shepherd’s Daniele Ielasi also jumping ahead of the German who retired after chunking a tyre on his Capricorn. In 1:8 there was no change in the top 5 despite both provisional TQ holder Robert Pietsch and 3rd placed Alberto Picco going out early after flipping their Mugens.

Pipping Ielasi by 4/100th of a second to set the fastest time for the Touring Car class, Green was happy with the result but on his way off the rostrum apologised to the car’s designer Michael Salven for what he said were too many small driver errors. Having suffered with his car being stuck in first gear in Q1, Green joked that having use of second gear was a big help but added that they now really have a good ‘ball park’ set-up which felt really good to drive and he feels there is still room for improvement. Planning to try different roll centre positions in the third & final qualifier the former British Champion said the 747 also appears to be very light on tyres.

Ielasi was another who said his car was perfect but the person in control was not. The former World Champion said he had three bad laps and during his fuel stop his mechanic lost grip of the fuel tank lid costing him further time. Describing tyre wear as ‘extreme’, the Italian will use Q3 to test tyres in preparation for tomorrow’s 40-minute final – the Top 4 from qualifying going directly into the Main event with the rest of the grid having to come through from the semi finals.

First & second after Q1 Dankel and Dirk Wischnewski both suffered with chunked tyres. After a mistake which caused the tyre damage Dankel decided to pull up as he knew he wouldn’t be able to improve on his opening time. After chunking his tyre in the warm-up, Wischnewski tried to complete the heat but overshooting his pitman Robert Pietsch during his fuel stop his run finally came to an end when the rear diff broke in his Xray.

Setting the third fastest time in Q3 to move up to fifth position, Shepherd driver Patrick Nahr was very happy with his run having switched to a spool in the front of his Sonic engined Velox V10. The 20-year-old former Euro B Champion said the change gave the car more steering at the end of the straight and better traction out of the corners. Once again team boss Patrick Schafer, who took the win here last year, retired with problems as did Capricorn’s Francesco Tironi, while Mikael Fransson’s Serpent 747 ran out of fuel due to his Orcan engine being set to rich.

In 1:8 Team Shepherd’s Oliver Mack was fastest from Serpent’s Merlin Depta but the times had no effect on the leading order of the qualification ranking. Mack said during the run his Picco engine felt down on power which was later traced to a broken bearing in his clutch. Switching from Xceed to Matrix tyres on his 966, Depta was very happy with his run which while it didn’t move him up the order was 4 seconds faster than his Q1 time.

Catching a dot in the chicane that sent his MRX 5 airborne, provisional TQ holder Pietsch decided not to rejoin. Also launching his car into the air but while on the racing line, a piece of debris the suspect for the backflip, Picco decided to call time on his run after the incident resulted in heavy contact with the tyre wall on the outside of the track. Elsewhere Michael Salven again failed to finish. Changing to a set-up he ran in practice that gave him lots of steering he said it had the opposite effect today and the lack of steering lead to a mistake that resulted in his upside down 966 flaming out when it was hit by another competitor.
