Massimo Fantini on overnight pole

Massimo Fantini on overnight pole

Italian racer Massimo Fantini, who was TQ after round 1 has gone a second quicker to claim the overnight pole position at the IFMAR 1/8th scale World Championships here in Cordoba. The Serpent 960 driver had to overcome an initial challenge from Lamberto Collari who was the early pace setter, but Max dug in his heels in the partly cloudy run to pull out out the quickest run of the day, a 33 lapper in 10:09.45. Overnight 2nd place is team mate Fabio Domanin who managed a great run in heat 11 to get a 33 Laps in 10:10.15 to give Serpent a provisional 1-2 on the grid. Next up is Italian Mugen racer Andrea Pirani who also managed a 33 lapper in 10:10.59, demoting current World Champion Lamberto Collari, to 4th, who managed to improve but not enough.

Collari Action

Lamberto was not too disheartened however “it was a positive day for me and the team (Novarossi) as we have the 3rd and the 4th position and ok the track is good but changes very fast and could create some problem with the car”, “the biggest trouble in the heat is when you have cold, hot, warm and windy and different weather conditions all in a few minutes of the race”.

Bertin Pit Action

In heat 12, some commotion in the pit lane caused a problem for Adrien Bertin and Francesco Tironi who hit a misplaced Keisuke Fukuda coming out of the pitlane. The Japanese driver had a flame out and his enthusiastic pit man placed the Mugen in the path of the exiting Kyosho pairing, causing a delay for Tironi and a large delay and eventual breakage for Bertin. Fukuda was given a stop and go. Bertin stated that “it’s just a very bad day, the first run we had a broken 2 speed and in the 2nd one while i was making my pit stop, in which i would have made not a bad time, Fukuda came out of the pits and crashed my car”, “I just hope tomorrow is not raining because it will be a different story, but thats racing”.

Jilles Groskamp Action

Dropping out of the top 4 and into 8th was Jilles Groskamp, the Dutch driver had his engine get too lean while in a fast 2nd run “the day goes well, because i wanted to start with a decent run in the first one, so in the 2nd one we tried some other things on the car, the car was very good, actually very good, and then the engine was too lean so we had to stop after 4 minutes.”

Michael Salven

Not managing to improve, and having to eventually give best on the circuit to Takaaki Shimo, Michael Salven, the German Serpent racer, was getting caught out by the high winds that picked up in final round “I have a high trim strip, but on the big sweeper when you turn in you have understeer and then you have the point where the wind comes on the side and you get more steering and then the wind comes from the back and it pushes up the rear and you have no rear traction”, “somehow i have more problems with this than other drivers and Massimo said he is running the same and on his car it is only a little noticeable”.

Official Standings after 2 ronds:

Fantini quickest after Round 1

Fantini quickest after Round 1

Heat 12 kicked off the 1st round of qualifying for the second group which has just taken place under very warm and sunny conditions. Making 5 minutes is proving to be a problem and in this, the quickest heat, a number of quick drivers came to a stop before 5 minutes like Ielasi and Swauger, while in a lot of cases just to be safe the racer took on a 2 stop strategy. This the quickest heat has seen Serpent racer Massimo Fantini go quickest after the round with a controlled 33 lap pace that saw him finish 2 seconds ahead of Kyosho ace Lamberto Collari in 2nd, while a further 2 seconds back was Shepherd Velox racer Robert Pietsch. The top 3 came from Heat 12 while the next 2 places came from racers in the 10th heat that saw 1/8th scale newcomer Jilles Groskamp put his Sirio powered Kyosho in 4th less than a second ahead Serpent racer and current Japanese National Champion Yuya Sahashi, who is now sitting in 5th.

Top 5 after round 1 (unofficial)
1. Massimo Fantini – 33Laps 10.10.475
2. Lamberto Collari – 33Laps 10.12.229
3. Robert Pietsch – 33Laps 10.14.506
4. Jilles Groskamp – 33Laps  10.15.759

Stefano Solaroli quickest on Monday

Stefano Solaroli quickest on Monday

Todays final, and only, practice round has been completed under dry but cool conditions with Italy’s Stefano Solaroli coming out out on top with the fastest laptime of 17.725 seconds. With not all of the drivers pushing hard and still using the session to test, fastest laptimes are a better indicator for showing pace than the practice heat results, yet also take into account that some racers are going to have to make 2 stops and so their pace would need to be quicker. The 2nd fastest today is the Motonica racer and pre Worlds runner up Dario Balestri with a 17.750 second lap with Michele Romagnoli ending up with the 3rd fastest time.

Mondays fastest practice laps
1. Stefano Solaroli – 17.725
2. Dario Balestri – 17.750
3. Michele Romagnoli – 17.790
4. Francesco Tironi – 17.829
5. Lamberto Collari – 17.858
6. Robert Pietsch – 17.880
7. Adrien Bertin – 17.884
8. Takaaki Shimo – 17.887
9. Andrea Cristiani – 17.906
10. Yuya Sahashi – 17.912
11. Michael Salven – 17.950
12. Andrea Pirani – 17.963
13. Massimo Fantini – 17.977
14. Hideo Kitazawa – 18.050
15. Steven Cuypers – 18.073

Qualifying begins tomorrow with all drivers getting 2 rounds of 10 minutes to set their best times and after each qualifying round the event organisers have confirmed that they will update the results on their page on MyLaps (see the new link on the right side of the page). We have also received the updated heat listing (see the new link on the right side of the page) which has been re ordered after todays practice sessions and will be the format that qualifying will start with tomorrow.

In the pits – Kyosho Evolva M3

Kyosho Evolva M3

With everybody waiting for the track to dry, I took the opportunity to talk to Takashi Miyashita, head designer of the new Evolva M3 about his creation. Essentially a completely new platform in 1/8th scale from Kyosho, one of our event site sponsors, the new M3 has been designed to fix all the issues that the team had with the previous Evolva through strengthening and optimising the cars construction. When asked to explain what was new on the car, Takashi replied “only a few of the parts are existing parts”, with the main new part being the chassis which has been designed to accept a smaller receiver pack, making for a narrower chassis plate.

Kyosho Evolva M3

The geometry of this car is however the same as on the previous chassis but the car has just been made narrower, lower and lighter. Other changes are the use of a rubber foam seal for the fuel tank to prevent fuel leaking from the tank, and new eccenters in the front and rear steering blocks and uprights to allow the height of the axle to be adjusted easily, thus changing the cars roll centre.

Kyosho Evolva M3

The rear of the car features completely new stronger plastics which also offer more adjustability than on the previous car, while as an additional feature, the car allows the rear wheelbase to also be adjusted through the use of spacers, similar to the front. The rear of the car now also has the rear body mount A-arms mounted to the centre of the rear upright, similar to that seen on both the new Serpent rear end and Mugen MRX-4X, of which you can find images of in our gallery.

Kyosho Evolva M3

Another new feature of the car is the ability to mount the throttle servo in the stand up position, as well as the laydown position, something that offers great flexibility and choice to the racer. Finally the car features carbon side stiffeners on both sides which, combined with the front chassis stiffener, allows the racer the ability to completely change the cars characteristics by mounting or removing these parts. The car will soon feature a new 2-speed clutch shoe which hasn’t yet been completed, but it will be ready in time for the cars release in December.
