Chassis – Yokomo BD8 2018
Motor – Scorpion RS 4.5T
ESC – Scorpion Vanguard ESC
Batteries – Scorpion 7700mAh
Tires – Ride (handout)
Radio/Servo – Sanwa/Power HD
Bodyshell – Protoform Type S Pro-lite
Remarks – Local superstar Meen Vejrak is the top Yokomo so far in qualifying using the 2018 BD8. Moving away from their standard setup for the tricky conditions at RC Addict, he has gone for softer springs all around and lowered the top of the front shocks down one hole. Making the front narrower by using 3.5mm wide hex adaptors, he is also using the back bone plate, which evens up the car’s flex. Up front he is using a brass front suspension block and a further 15 grams in the bumper to make the car more stable on power. In terms of body the Type S from Protoform has been mounted 2mm forward while the rear wing is fixed as far back as it can go in a effort to get more steering while maintaining stability.

Coelho wraps up overall TQ at TITC

Bruno Coelho will start out his quest for a third consecutive TITC victory tomorrow after wrapping up the overall TQ at RC Addict in Bangkok.  Having dominated yesterday’s three rounds of qualifying, the Xray driver secured pole position with yet another different level performance in the fourth qualifier.  Behind him, the main challenge again came from Japan but not from Naoto Matsukura, who had a mistake on the first lap, but from Infinity team-mate Akio Sobue.  Sobue stopped the clock 2.5-seconds off the TQ pace.  Alexander Hagberg finally broke into the Top 3 having finished all of yesterday’s qualifying 4th fastest.  The Swede was on for second but had issues on his penultimate lap which dropped him back behind Sobue.  Despite his mistake Matsukura would recover to record a P4 ahead of Meen Vejrak and Atsushi Hara.

‘It was another good round’, was Coelho’s reaction after Q4.  The reigning champion, who claimed that title from the TQ last year, continued, ‘I just drove easy to make no mistake and could pull away slowly’.  Having a clear advantage over his rivals, on becoming Top Qualifier with two rounds remaining he said, ‘To get the overall TQ without any problems from the driver or mechanics of the car is really great and I hope we can keep it like this for the rest of the weekend. I have nothing more to say really’.

Sobue described his car as ‘a little difficult’ to drive but the CETC Champion was pleased with himself that the run had ‘now no mistakes’.  He added, ‘the car was a little nervous and we need to make it more stable but the conditions for the next one will be much cooler so we will change the set-up for the higher bite’.  The 5th and penultimate round of qualifying will be the latest a qualifier will be run with drivers expecting it to be much cooler and in theory quicker conditions.

‘The car was better than yesterday but still I lost a little time avoiding upside down cars’, was Hagberg’s summary of Q4.  The Xray driver continued, ‘definitely the pace was there to be second so I will try to have a clean round in the next one’.  Putting the car improvement down to a ‘small change in the roll centre’, asked if he planned any further changes the Swede replied, ‘the track conditions will change massively for the next one.  Its going to cool down a lot, it will be the coolest time we run on the track all weekend and I am probably not going to change my set-up’.

‘The first lap again’, said a frustrated Matsukura.  Switching from PSS shocks to the standard set-up, he said they are better but more risky as his contact with the curb in the sweeper after the main straight showed when contact launched his car.  He continued, ‘I think it lost me 3-seconds or something but the car was pretty good. I just had that one mistake’.  Asked about the expected high traction for Q5, the former World Champion will go up in both diff and shock oil for it.  For team-mate Marc Rheinard he would also make an early mistake.  Rolling his Infinity coming on to the main straight he lost almost 8-seconds and now sits 5th on the provisional grid.

Remaining Yokomo’s leading challenge, with Ronald Volker copying his set-up for his 5th attempt but ending up rolling, Vejrak described his run to the 5th fastest time as ‘difficult’ due to the track being ‘a lot more hot than yesterday’.  The Bangkok driver said, ‘we went much more soft with the shocks.  The lap times look OK but it is very difficult to drive’.  On the final qualifier of the day, the former nitro touring car World Champion said, ‘It should be cooler but you never know.  The traction now is completely different to practice but I do know the four guys in front of me are too strong’.

Remarks – The reigning TITC Champion Bruno Coelho is once again dominating proceedings in Bangkok with his Xray T4 2018. Having tested here in the week leading up to the event, they have made a lot of changes to the shock package to combat the now bumpier surface. Using their experience from the previous 2 years of coming to RC Addict they have been able to setup the car to their liking and also know what diff settings to use for the different time of day. Running a lightweight Montech Racer body they have been playing around with its mounting having not had too much outdoor experience with the shell and now found a good setup. In terms of electronics the new G3 motor from Hobbywing is running on average 10 degrees cooler than what they used last year which has allowed them to run it with more turbo. Finally Bruno is running his new BR1 BC 1863X steering servo which will be available to purchase next week.

Coelho rules first day of qualifying at TITC

Bruno Coelho has ruled over the first day of qualifying at the TITC, the Xray driver having a perfect and dominant day at RC Addict to TQ all three qualifiers on the schedule.  Q3 would see the reigning champion again top the times from Naoto Matsukura as he had done in the previous round but this time with double the time margin.  Mixing up the order a little with Top 5 almost identical in Q1 & 2, Marc Rheinard would end the day with his first Top 3 run going faster than Alexander Hagberg would made it a hat trick of P4s for the day.  While Coelho had a strong day, for the two drivers that joined him on last year’s podium it was day to forget.  After posting he ninth fastest time in the opening two qualifiers, Ronald Volker would have a DNF in Q3 while Nicholas Lee, who lost out on the win on a tie break with Coelho last year, finds himself 33rd in the overnight qualification having DNF’d Q1 & 2.  The Singapore driver did however finish on a more positive result with a P8 for the third qualifier.

‘It was a very good first day. The car works in all conditions, it was a little colder in the last one and it works still’, was how Coelho described his day’s performance.  Three seconds faster than Matsukura in Q3, the ETS Champion added, ‘we will change nothing and just try to continue with no mistakes tomorrow’.

‘No mistakes but slow’, was Matsukura’s reaction after Q3.  The Infinity driver, who crashed in the first two laps of opening two qualifiers, continued, ‘I had understeer, the set-up was no good’.  Lowering the front upper arms he said ‘it was not so good so I will go back up’. With his team-mate Rheinard and Sobue going opposite directions in their diff oil choice and liking the changes, the Japanese driver will also make other changes for tomorrow but ruled out the diff as one of the changes.

Commenting on his third for the round, Rheinard said, ‘I got a little loose at the end of the straight which cost me a couple of tenths but for sure we are getting there’.  Changing to a harder diff for the last of the day’s qualifiers he said, ‘a harder diff made the car feel a little better for me but I know my team-mates tried softer and also liked it so I will talk with them and see if I will make any other change for Q4 & 5 tomorrow’, the sixth & final qualifier due to run Sunday morning.’ He continued, ‘we are still 3-second away from Bruno so obviously they have found something that is better, still I’m in the A-Main at the end of the first day which is better than last year’.   On his official debut for Infinity at the TITC last year the multiple World Champion found himself qualifying in the B-Main.

‘I lost too much time at the start and couldn’t make it up at the end’, was Hagberg’s thoughts on yet another P4 run.  He continued, ‘I’m not sure why but we need to work on the first laps so I can be more aggressive with the car’.  He concluded, ‘At least I have three decent runs so I can drive more with confidence tomorrow’.

Completing the Top 5, Bangkok’s very own Meen Vejrak said, ‘It has been a difficult day. The temperature is so high so its easy to make a mistake’.  He continued, ‘If you push at the beginning the tyres overheat so that is why I have tried to drive safe to get good points’.  With a 6th from Q1, a ‘little mistake’ in Q2 cost him 2 places and he ended up 7th, but the former 200mm World Champion, who won that title at RC Addict, said, ‘with these points I can now try stuff tomorrow’.

Losing almost 4-seconds on the last lap after ‘a big mistake’ that cost him a Top 2 run, Akio Sobue said changes to his Infinity for the round had made it ‘much better’.  Catching the curb after the chicane which flipped his car, he added, ‘the car is ok but the driver was shit and I hope tomorrow I have no more mistakes but overall today was not so bad’.  Changing to a softer diff he said while the steering had improved he still wants more steering and he has a few small changes he will try tomorrow.
