Orlowski cruises to A1 win

sun_orloneu

Michal Orlowski cruised an easy 6-seconds win in the opening 2WD A-Main at the DHI Cup this morning. Starting from second in the grid, the Schumacher driver went to the front on the opening lap after an error by Top Qualifier Tom  Cockerill on the first run down the main straight and quickly pulled clear of the field.  Behind Orlowski the main battle for the first half of the race was between Xray’s Martin Bayer and Team Associated’s Joakim Nicolaisen with Serpent’s Joern Neumann in close pursuit. With Bayer & Nicolaisen tripping up it was Neumann who was the benefactor, the German going on to finish second 8/10ths in front of Bayer.

sun_michalA1

With a smile Orlowski described A1 as ‘a nice morning run’. The Polish ace said after yesterday’s 4WD qualifying on the track he expected traction would be low but it turned out to be ‘much, much lower’. Leaving his car unchanged from 2WD qualifying he said with the low traction it was difficult to drive but with everyone else caught out by the conditions he was able to drive a safe race and encouraged by how easy he was able to build up a gap over his rivals. Expecting everyone to be better prepared for the conditions in A2, the 14-year-old said he will make a small change to his KF2 SE going from 1 to 1.5mm of rear camber.

sun_carcockerill

‘The car had zero grip’ that was Cockerill’s reaction. So bad was the traction after just a few warm-up laps the British driver raced back to his pits to change tyres thinking the problem was a bad set of tyres. The 2014 Champion said the only change he made to the car was to tighten all the screws and he will loosen them for A2. Commenting on his roll on the straight he said ,’I just clipped a dot coming onto the straight’. Recovering to 5th, further mistakes would see him finish 9th.

Another driver surprised by the lack of grip, fourth place starter Neumann said once he got by Bayer & Nicolaisen and pulled a gap he just kept it safe saying Orlowski was ‘too far gone to catch’. For the second final, the former two time champion will make a shock change to his 2WD modified SX4.

Coelho takes overall 4WD TQ honours at DHI Cup

sat_brunotq

Bruno Coelho has claimed the overall TQ honours in 4WD Buggy at the DHI Cup.  The World Champion’s first time to attend the famous Danish event, the Xray driver became the Top Qualifier despite pulling a corner off his XB4 into Q4 but it was the opening lap that would decide the outcome.  Going into the fourth & final round, it was a two way battle between Coelho and David Ronnefalk for pole position, Coelho having the advantage of two TQ runs to his credit. On their first lap however both drivers would make simultaneous mistake one corner apart, Ronnefalk coming off the worst.  Recovering, having lost on 9/10ths rather than the 4 second lost by the Swede, Coelho would take up the TQ pace after 3-laps looking on target to claim the TQ in style.  However with less than a minute to go he would jump the back section wrong sending his car crashing into the side of a jump in the opposite direction and into instant retirement.  It was to make no difference however as further mistakes by Ronnefalk meant the HB driver would end up P7 with Michal Orlowski the big benefactor getting the TQ time for the round.  The result means the Schumacher driver starts 2nd in between Coelho and Ronnefalk.

sat_brunoq4

‘Big mistake, too much throtte’, that was Coelho’s reaction to the incident.  He continued that with the extra throttle input ‘the rear got loose and it jumped sideways’ sending it crashing into the side of the opposite lane jump.  Despite his error,  Coelho was happy to be starting at the front of tomorrow’s grid saying ‘the car is amazing’ so apart from replacing the damaged corner the plan is to ‘drive easy and make no mistakes’.

sat_michalback

‘I’d prefer to be starting third rather than second’ was Orlowski’s reaction to the outcome being gifted the final TQ brought.  The European Champion said while his improved car has ‘pace for a podium for sure’ he added ‘Bruno and David are faster than me’.  Running new tyres in the final qualifier he said in the beginning he was ‘pretty slow’ but as the car felt better he was able to run 2nd behind Coelho, a position he was happy with as he would secure him P3 on the grid ‘but then Bruno crashed’.

sat_ronnefalkq4

With the fastest lap of Q4, Ronnefalk said, ‘its not good to crash at the beginning’.  With the race marking his first full season with HB, he said ‘it a pity I lost out to Orlowski on the grid but my car feels really good so its game on for the finals’.  Running new tyres in the final qualifier, last year’s third place finisher is confident between this set and another he ran in earlier that everything should be fine in that department and that it is going to comedown to him delivering through his driving.

sat_jorn3

Having enjoy a four year reign in 4WD, Neumann will make his title defence from fourth on the grid. The Serpent driver said ‘I got a 2, 2 ,3 & 4 and I end up with fourth on the grid’.  Describing his Orion powered SX4 as ‘easy to drive  but lacking steering’ he added with it having been OK in Q1 & 2 (he is) not sure why its not as good now’.  Set to cut less pins off his front tyres for the opening final to get more steering, the German said ‘I will go for the win of course but a podium would be good’.  Describing the front of the field in terms of pace as ‘pretty close’ he said while ‘Bruno is faster he crashes’ so nothing is a foregone conclusion. Starting behind Neumann and completing the top half of the grid will be Martin Bayer, last year’s runner-up.  In the final qualifier the Czech ace showed strong running on the TQ pace before a mistake with 2-minutes to go.

sat_karlsencar

One stand out performance of the event is that of Malin Karlsen, the ever impressive 10-year-old booking her place in the A-Main.  The talented Norwegian would conclude a great qualifying run with a P5 in Q4 to secure her ORCA powered Xray 8th on the grid behind Yokomos of 2WD Top Qualifier Tom Cockerill and Danish teenager Frederik Hovgaard.

Kutvonen takes final qualifier

sat_viljami2

Viljami Kutvonen has TQ’d the final round of qualifying at the DHI Cup.  The result secures the Awesomatix driver 2nd on the grid behind Top Qualifier Ronald Volker, the defending champion having wrapped up pole position with a third TQ run in the previous round.  While Volker would make two mistakes as he used Q4 to test a set-up for the finals, Kutvonen topped the times posting the second fastest time of qualifying with a 6/10ths of a second advantage over Alexander Hagberg.  Hagberg as a result will start tomorrow’s three A-Main encounters from third on the grid ahead of 2013 Champion Adrian Berntsen.  Making the trip to the famous Danish event for the first time, a somewhat frustrated Bruno Coelho completes the top half of the grid.

sat_kuthag

‘It was good, just liked I planned it’, that was Kutvonen’s response to delivering a TQ run.  The 2014 runner-up said reverting back to his Q2 set-up along with running stiffer flex settings on his LRP powered A800 left the car ‘unbelievably good’. Planning to leave the car unchanged for A1, the Finnish driver is confident ‘the car is good enough to battle with Ronald tomorrow’ for the win.

sat_ronalecvil

Commenting on what was essentially a 5-minute test for the finals, Volker said the changes made to his BD7 ‘made it very easy to drive’ but the car suffered from understeer.  Catching a dot sending the car into a roll just after the first minute mark, Volker said he then drove over the limit trying to make back the time.  Getting back on the TQ pace with the fastest lap of the weekend he would make a second mistake with four laps to go leaving him to end up P3. Looking to the finals, he will go back to his Q3 set-up.

sat_hagberg3

‘I thought I drove really well but I was still slightly off the pace’, was Hagberg’s reaction to performance, Q4 his fastest qualifier.  The Xray driver said, ‘Ronald and Viljami have faster cars and we have to find something for tomorrow if we are going to be able to compete with them in the finals’.

sat_backadrian

Having shown promise in practice when he debuted new Danish manufacturer Gizmo’s GZ-1 at the ETS season opener in December, Adrian Berntsen gave the team reason to celebrate as he secured 4th on the grid.  One of the company’s co-founders Martin Lissau, a former 1:5 World Champion, said they were ‘very happy’ to be so well placed on the DHI Cup A-Main grid with the result showing they have a good idea in the car design.  The Dane went on to explain that the high traction this weekend is not something they have been able to experience before so it has added to the learning curve.  Asked about Berntsen’s final qualifier he said fitting a new bearing set from a different manufacturer to the car for the heat they tightened up as the race went on slowing their star driver. With Steen Graversen making up arm set-up changes to the car prior to bearing issue Berntsen was ‘quite happy’ with the feeling of the car.

sat_brunoo

A driver who many expected to put Volker’s quest for a 7th DHI Cup under treat this weekend, Coelho himself was miffed by his lack of pace.  Having tried three different bodyshells, the set-up of Hagberg, Cerny and Hudy but with no improvement the World Championship runner-up said the problem had to be down to a bad set of tyres.  While drivers get two sets of tyres for the weekend, Coelho said the tyres improve with each run and while he has a second set they are not going to solve his problems as they have no running on them and are there going to be even slower.  He said while his T4 is drivable it has no traction compared to his rivals.  Starting behind Coelho will be Xray team-mate Marek Cerny followed by Yokomo’s Meen Vejrak. The grid is completed by Serpent’s Marc Fischer, Schumacher’s Elliot Harper and young Japanese talent Naoki Akiyama.  Former Champion, his 2008 win launching his international racing career, Viktor Wilck finds himself with the unenviable BQ honours at this year’s event.

sat_timTQ

In Super Stock, Kyosho driver Tim Benson gave the Japanese manufacturer’s new TF7 it first international race honour.  Debuting the car at the ETS season opener but the event proving ‘tough’, in Odense the German was on the pace from the start setting the pace in practice.  Carrying that through to qualifying he would TQ’d the opening qualifier but TQ runs for Xray’s Jan Ratheisky and Marek Cerny in Q2 & 3, meant it was all to play for in the final round.  Recovering from his set backs in the 2nd & 3rd round, Benson would deliver in style in the final round to TQ with the only 23-lap run of the weekend. Behind Benson, it is reigning champion Cerny who will start second followed by 2015 podium finishers Ratheisky and Mike Gosvig.  Awesomatix driver Tony Streit completes the Top 5 line-up.

Coelho & Ronnefalk set for TQ battle final qualifier

sat_bruno3

Bruno Coelho and David Ronnefalk are set to battle it out for the overall 4WD Buggy TQ at the DHI Cup.  With Coelho taking the opening qualifier, in Q2 it was Ronnefalk who took Q2.  In the third round Ronnefalk looked to repeat until with three laps to go the HB driver would loose his rhythm as he passed Martin Bayer and crash.  Having been in hot pursuit of his rival this would allow Coelho to post a second TQ run, this time ahead of European Champion Michal Orlowski.  With defending champion Joern Neumann completing the Top 3, Ronnefalk would end up with a P6 behind Bayer and Yokomo young charger Frederik Hovgaard.  The result means now only Ronnefalk can deny World Champion Coelho from making his DHI Cup race debut as Top Qualifier, the Portuguese driver having the advantage of holding the fastest TQ time putting all the pressure on his Swedish rival for Q4.

sat_4wdcoelho3

After ‘mistakes, a lot of them’ in Q2, Coelho said things in the driver’s department were much better with just one mistake in Q3.  Describing his LRP powered XB4 as ‘perfect’, the only problem was ‘some loose screws’ with it discovered afterwards the motor mounting able to move around freely in the car.  Acknowledging luck was on his side to have completed the run trouble free, other than have it screwed tightly in place for the final qualifier he will leave the car unchanged as he is very happy with the EOS set-up he put on it after practice.

sat_drivdavid

Commenting on his Q2 TQ, Ronnefalk said ‘it was a good run, no mistakes, the car felt good and with Bruno having a lot of mistakes it was an easy TQ’.  Switching from a Proline to a JConcepts body for Q3 as well as adding a aero flap to the front shock tower he said this resulted in more steering. He said the run started to go wrong when he caught Bayer.  Opening up to let him passed the 20-year-old said after that he didn’t know what the Czech driver was thinking as he tried o come back at him almost taking him out.  ‘I lost momentum’ as a result of the contact leading him to case the back double allowing Coelho to go to the top of the timing screens, with future mistakes dropping him back down the order.  Planning just new tyres for the deciding qualifier he said ‘I’m looking for another TQ in the last one’.

sat_4wdorlo

Improving his result with each run, starting out with a P5 in first round and third in Q2, Orlowski said raising the camber links on his Schumacher for Q3 had given the car better balance but he struggled with tyres. Running the same set of handout Schumacher Mini Pins for a third time he said it was too much.  Describing it as a ‘good run (with) no mistakes’, the Pole said with new tyres for the next one he should be more competitive having been 3.5-seconds off Coelho’s pace.

sat_4wdcarneu

Getting a better than expected P2 in Q2, Neumann said cutting an extra row of pins off his front tyres and moving the shocks to the outside hole on the arm ‘the car pushed way more than before’.  The unbeaten 4WD DHI Cup Champion of the last four years, this the fifth running of offroad at the event, the Serpent driver will revert to his Q2 set-up for the last qualifier.

sat_frederik

Behind Neumann, Demark’s Hovgaard continued his impressive showing as the leading Yokomo contender, 2WD Top Qualifier Tom  Cockerill struggling in 4WD.  The 17-year-old hasn’t changed his YZ-4 over qualifying declaring himself happy with both its and his own performance with him getting a 5th in Q2 which he backed up with a P4 in the latest round.

Volker is Top Qualifier at DHI Cup

sat_ronaldTQ

Ronald Volker is Top Qualifier for the DHI Cup, the Yokomo driver securing his fifth pole position at the Danish classic when he made it three from three in the penultimate round of qualifying.  Chasing a 7th win at the Odense based event, the German topped the times in Q3 from Xray’s Alexander Hagberg after an early mistake by Viljami Kutvonen ended the Awesomtaix driver’s expected challenge of Volker’s reign on proceedings.

sat_volker4

‘It always nice to start off a new season with TQ’, said Volker of his latest pole position at the DHI Cup.  Having won 4 of his 6 titles as Top Qualifier, While he qualified 3rd when he won in 2012 and started second when he was victorious in 2010, on the other four occasions victory came from starting at the front of the grid.  Commenting on his Q3 performance, the fastest of his three TQ runs, he said ‘the car started quite edgy and for the first 2-minutes I didn’t feel comfortable but then it was on pace’. Setting the fastest lap he said despite how his BD7 2016 started out the set-up changes made ahead of the run were an improvement for the final 3-minutes having previous struggled in the latter part of the heat with the car getting loose.  With the car getting ‘up on 2-wheels’ a number of times he said Q4 will be a test of some changes to try & get rid of the edginess in preparation for tomorrow’s finals.

sat_alex2

Over four and a half seconds off Volker’s pace, Hagberg said he started off well but for the second half of the qualifier his T4 became ‘very difficult to drive’. Having to open up for a recovering Kutvonen he ‘also lost time for that too’.  The European Champion said the problem is that they need to make the car more consistent over 5-minutes and this is something they need to try to find for the final qualifier which he believes if they can do will give him a good chance to race Volker for the win tomorrow. For team-mate Bruno Coelho and Marek Cerny it was a tough round.  Two mistakes for Coelho left him with a P9 while an error that hindered Meen Vejrak left Cerny 18th fastest.

sat_kutvonen

‘Not a very good run for me’ was how Kutvonen summed up a disappointing run.  The Finnish star said going to a harder front spring brought on traction roll and with it striking on the second corner after starting the heat.  For his final attempt and P2 on the grid up for grabs between himself & Hagberg, he will go back to his Q2 set-up when he got to within 4/10ths of Volker.

sat_carber

After starting out with a P6 in Q1 but only 11th in P2, 2013 Champion Adrien Berntsen would run the fourth fastest time in Q3.  The Norwegian said after bad driving and a difficult car in Q2, a different tyre prep made this a little better.  Describing his Gizmo GZ-1 as ‘still a little too aggressive’, he said he needs to discuss his options with his mechanic & Gizmo co-founder Martin Christensen and find a way to get the car easier to drive.

sat_meen

Changing to a solid front suspension mount on his Yokomo, Meen Vejrak said he was ‘happier with the car’.  Running a Top 3 pace, on the sixth lap the former nitro touring car World Champion would get caught up in an error by Cerny.  Making contact with the BD7 it would cause a body tuck losing the Thai driver 3-seconds.  For the final qualifier Vejrak plans to change his tyre prep with his mechanic & Yokomo team-manager Robert Itoh also consider rising the cars diff position.

sat_harper2 copy

Completing the Top 6 was Schumacher’s Elliot Harper but the British Champion was not celebrating the result. ‘I managed to stay on the track this time’ was his reasoning for the improved performance.  Describing the car as ‘really aggressive initially and then having understeer’ he rambled off a list of things he changed on the car adding ‘I don’t know what else to change to be honest’.  Currently 8th in the qualification ranking he needs another good run to book his place in the A-Main.
