Having said he was ‘very close’ when he posted the second fastest time on Q3, defending World Champion Ryan Cavalieri finally hit the top in the penultimate round of qualifying taking it by a mere 0.062 from Joern Neumann. Q3 pace setter Ty Tessman completed the Top 3 ahead of Lee Martin’s Tamiya and the Associated’s of Steven Hartson and Neil Cragg. The result means that the final qualifier will see the Top 2 finishers at the 2011 World Championship will battle it out for the honour of becoming Top Qualifier for the 15th IFMAR 4WD Electric Buggy World Championships.
Almost copying team-mate Ryan Maifield who threw away a TQ run in Q3 on the last lap, Cavalieri said he got lucky when he got out of shape at the banking before the start of the main straight adding he doesn’t know how his B44.2 didn’t roll. Aware the times would be very close he said he gave a little extra and pushing just a little too hard on the last lap. Moving the steering rack position forward for the round he said he liked the change. Also trying a swaybar on the single warm-up lap he said he opted to disconnect that before the start of the qualifier.
A bad opening lap from Neumann, which left him running 5th in the A-Heat with Durango team-mate Ryan Lutz top of the timing screens, meant the German had to push hard to recover. Running a rebuilt buggy, having bent his prototype chassis in Q3, Neumann said he ‘pushed very hard’ adding he was surprised at how comfortable the buggy was to drive on the limit. Making a second mistake he said he still knew it would be close for a TQ run. Posting the fastest lap of the round, a 27.333, with 3-laps to go it would end up being very close for the Euro Offroad Series Champion hundred’s shy of Cavalieri. Happy with his Orion powered DEX410 Neumann said other than a fresh set of the controlled Proline tyres he will run the buggy as is in the final pole position deciding qualifier.
Tessman was happy with his 3rd. The HB driver said after his two poor runs in the opening qualifiers he said he needed a clean run to back up his Q3 TQ run. Taking a cautious approach which resulted in a mistake free 5-minutes, the US Champion felt he maybe drove a little too carefully as he was not as fast as he would have liked to have been but he got the result he needed.

Defending 4wd World Champion Ryan Cavalieri is running the Associated B44.2 with a number of specific parts for the unique track conditions developed following the Nationals and Worlds warmup race. The most noticeable part is the one off aluminium chassis plate which was made to help dissipate heat but also add more weight to the car lower down to help combat the high grip conditions. Ryan is also running gear diffs on the car as well as updated drive cups from the centre drive spur gear as the track is very unforgiving on the cars drivetrain. RC is also running the newly released low friction ball cups and harder A-arms and on top he is using the latest B44 shell from JConcepts. In terms of setup he has worked on stiffening up the front end by running harder springs, stiffer oils and even trying a front anti-roll bar.

After a rocky start to 4WD qualifying, failing to make the Top 10 in the opening two rounds, Ty Tessman bounced back to TQ Q3 ahead of Team Associated’s Ryan pairing of Cavalieri and Maifield, the latter throwing away a TQ run the final lap of his run. For Q1 & 2 pace setter Joern Neumann a bad landing at the quad after the main straight resulted in a bent chassis for the Durango driver who would only be able for 11th for the round. The biggest news of the third qualifier however is that newly crowned 2WD World Champion Jared Tebo will not make the A-Main. Having finished all three rounds well down the order even if the Kyosho driver was to TQ today’s remaining two rounds he would not make the Top 10.
Tessmann said not crashing in Q3 was a big reason for his TQ but the US National Champion said set-up adjustments to his HB D4-13 also helped a lot. The changes saw a huge improvement in how easy it was to drive the buggy faster in particular the carousel corner after the start/finish line.
‘Getting there’ was how defending Champion Cavalieri described his run. Half a second off Tessman, the American said he is ‘very close’ now adding the he probably would have been closer had he not had to run so closely on track with Japan’s Naoto Matsukura. Having to keep an eye on the Yokomo driver as he ran very closely behind his B44.2, he said one advantage of this was that he found a number of sections he needs to find a bit more speed for racing. Based on this the 4-time World Champion will make some small tweaks for Q4.
Team-mate Maifield was understandable annoyed with himself for throwing away a TQ run. Pushing too hard through the corner after the carousel he caught the pipe which sent his B44.2 directly in to one of the track cones losing him over 2-seconds.
Driving Durango’s standard kit DEX410 Ryan Lutz claimed 4th position ahead of the Kyosho of David Ronnefalk. The Swede said the run was ‘pretty consistent’ with just one traction roll which luckily saw the prototype ZX5 land on its wheels. The 1:8 Nitro Offroad European Champion said they are now making progress having earlier lacked corner speed. Running the same car as Tebo, the teenager said due to their different driving style their set-ups they each run are very different. Behind Ronnefalk, Kody Numedahl completed the Top 6 followed by the similar B44.2 of Brian Strange. Once again Dakotah Phend was the only TLR in the Top 10 taking his 22-4 to the 8th fastest time ahead of Carson Wernimont and Tamiya’s Lee Martin.
