Tebo does TQ double

Jared Tebo will start the Buggy final at the 12th running of ‘The Dirt’ Nitro Challenge from pole position after putting in a carbon copy performance of yesterday when he wrapped up the Top Qualifier honours for Truggy.  The US Champion improved his morning time by over 7 seconds to top the time sheets for Q2 from Ty Tessmann to make it the perfect weekend so far for the Kyosho team driver.  Running the same set-up and AKA tyre combination as the morning run, Tebo said he is really liking the way his buggy is feeling on the track and with the TQ in the bag plans to work on his engine tune in Q3 having felt it ran a little too lean in Q2.

Ty Tessmann

Becoming the only other driver besides Tebo to record a 10 lap qualifier, Tessmann was very upbeat after his Q2 performance. Having changed both the swaybar and used a softer tyre insert, the factory Hot Bodies driver also added a fin from the engine back to the rear wing which he said made the buggy a lot more stable. Happy with where the OS powered D8 is at now he plans to leave everything as is for the third and final qualifying which will be run under flood lights and should see the temperature out here in the Arizona desert drop considerably.

Ryan Maifield

‘A shit load better’ was how Ryan Maifield described his Associated RC8B after setting the third fastest time.  The 2009 event winner was on target for a 10 lap run but ran out of fuel on his final lap.  Unhappy with his engines both yesterday in Truggy and again today Maifield took his buggy to the rear of the car park here at the Nitro Pit after Q2 to try sort out the tuning.  Unable to get the engine to his liking the team decided to try a different can of fuel which immediately resulted in his Reedy engine running much sharper. Although feeling a little under the weather himself, Maifield says he is now aiming for nothing less than a TQ run in the final qualifier.

World Champion Cody King set the fourth fastest time finding improvement from running thicker oil in the rear shocks of his Kyosho MP9 and switching to AKA Enduro tyres.  The 23-year-old plans to run the same set-up maybe changing to softer springs to suit the cooler conditions.

Ryan Cavalieri

Defending champion Ryan Cavalieri set the 5th fastest time and pretty pleased with that when it was discovered he had broken the front shock tower on his Associated early in the run.  Team-mate Steven Hartson took sixth, something the 19-year-old’s father said was just down to good driving rather than changing anything on the buggy.  It was a good second round of qualifying for Harston as he TQ’d the 1:8 Electric Buggy class ahead of Round 1 pace setter Dylan Rodriguez and Losi’s Adam Drake.  Drake was seventh fastest with his nitro buggy after putting in a ‘safe run’.  Opting to run Losi Eclipse tyres he said it made his Novarossi powered 8ight easy to drive but at the cost of outright speed.

Once again Taylor Peterson was the fastest Mugen with 8th followed by Losi drivers Drew Moller and Mike Truhe who rounds out the Top 10.

Tebo carries form through to Buggy

Team Kyosho’s Jared Tebo has picked up where he left off in Truggy yesterday with a TQ run in the opening round of qualifying for the Buggy class at ‘The Dirt’ Nitro Challenge. The only driver to record ten laps, the US Champion also set the fastest lap but said he pushed a little too hard in the later part of the run resulting in a mistake that cost him 5 seconds on his penultimate lap.

Ryan Cavalieri

Setting the second fastest time, defending champion Ryan Cavalieri said his run was clean and he was happy with second. Describing his buggy as pretty descent he said it was not quite 100% yet but plans to make some shock changes for Q2 to rectify that. ‘Satisfactory’ was how team-mate Ryan Maifield summed up his run to the fourth fastest time. The 2009 winner of this event, he said his buggy was uncomfortable to drive and considering that it was a pretty descent opening round. Running JConcepts Hybrid tyres he plans to try both a harder compound and insert for Q2 along with a softer shock set-up.

Ty Tessmann

Ty Tessmann made it three different manufacturers at the top of the time sheets. The factory Hot Bodies driver crashed on the opening lap but after said the run was clean. Finding the D8 a little unstable to drive he will try a thicker sway bar next time out along with trying a different foam combination in the Proline Holeshot.

Cody King

World Champion Cody King stopped the clocks in the fifth fastest time and declared himself happy with his first run, saying it was his first buggy run in a while due to being sick for two weeks prior to this week. Encouraged by his team-mates TQ run, he plans to go with a harder tyre and a stiffer shock set-up for the next qualifier.

Taylor Peterson

Heading the Mugen challenge after the opening round of qualifying Taylor Peterson took his MBX6 around the Joey ‘The Dirt’ Christensen designed track in the sixth fastest time. The 21-year-old ran AKA soft compound Impacts tyres but felt they caused the buggy to be a little twitchy and plans to switch to a medium compound for Q2. Team-mate Dylan Rodriguez, who TQ’d the opening round of 1:8 Electric Buggy this morning ahead of Adam Drake, set the 9th fastest time.

Mike Truhe

Mike Truhe was the best of the Team Losi Racing squad taking his 8ight to the seventh fastest time just in front of team-mate Adam Drake. The last man to win the event since Team Associated drivers took over the reigns in 2008, Truhe said he went with the wrong tyre choice. Choosing a Kingpin tyre he said while the track looked to a have a groove, to drive it was very dusty and a Blockhead would have been a better choice to cut through the dust.

Castellano fastest in Truggy Q3

Matt Castellano topped the time sheets for the third & final round of Truggy qualifying at the ‘The Dirt’ Nitro Challenge finishing 2-seconds clear of defending buggy champion Ryan Cavalieri.  The Team Losi driver who was seventh fastest in the opening two qualifiers at the Arizona event put his TQ run down simply to better driving having made no changes to the set-up on his N-Vision powered 8ight-T throughout the day.

After reporting throttle response issues with his Orion engine in Q2, Cavalieri ran a different transmitter for the last qualifier and afterwards was much happier with his Associated RC8-T. Complaining of the track being too wet for the start of his run following the hosing of the track he said that by the end both he and the truggy were going well.  Having run closed cell inserts in his Pro-Line tyres throughout qualifying, Cavalieri plans to switch to molded inserts for the final which he thinks will suit the track here better.  While Cavalieri turned his qualifying around Associated team-mate Ryan Maifield’s day got worse.  Suffering a switch problem his truggy went out of control during the warm-up for his final qualifier and crashed so heavily it broke the rear chassis brace and bent the chassis.

Having suffered an engine cut in Q2 following a competitive 5th in the opening heat, Mugen’s Dylan Rodriguez put in a great final qualifier to set the third fastest time.  Team-mate Taylor Peterson also enjoyed his best round setting the 7th fastest time. The 21-year-old changed the servo saver on his MBX6-T for Q3 along with switching from AKA Grid Iron super soft to soft compound resulting in a much better feeling with the truggy. Running Alpha engines he said the one in his truggy is still very tight and he expects it should be just coming into its peak for the final.

Mike Truhe

Setting the fourth fastest time Mike Truhe said he found conditions for the final qualifier a little tough.  Run under spot lights the Losi driver said it was hard to see in the low light conditions but overall he is really confident that he has a good solid truggy for the Mains.  Team-mate Adam Drake had suffered an unusual incident that lost him 15 seconds.   A mistake at the drop off section saw his truggy need marshaling but unfortunately as the marshall ran towards it he was unable to get stopped in time and collided with the wooden frame, leaving him momentarily stunned and Drake’s car still stuck.

Cody King

Having dominated Q1 & 2 with their drivers taking first and second in both, Team Kyosho could only manage 5th fastest with Cody King, while team-mate Jared Tebo lasted only four laps before the battery lead came undone after the clip fell out causing his truggy to come to a halt out on track.  With second secured on the grid behind team-mate Tebo, King said he used the round to find the limits of the Inferno ST-RR on the track and having over stepped the mark a few times he is confident their package is strong enough for the win in Saturday’s Truggy A-Main.

Ty Tessmann

Completing the top 6 was defending champion Ty Tessmann.  The 18-year-old factory Hot Bodies driver was another to complain of radio trouble after his D8T lost steering control twice during the 7-minute qualifier.  The Canadian’s father & pitman said they will change everything in the radio box for the final in the hope of stopping the problem reoccurring.

With Truggy qualifying complete the attention now turns to Buggy with 1:8 Nitro and 1:8 Electric each getting three rounds of qualifying tomorrow (Friday).  Our coverage from the Nitro Pit, which is supported by Team Durango, continues then.

Tebo secures Truggy TQ honours

Jared Tebo is the Top Qualifier for the Truggy class at the ‘The Dirt’ Nitro Challenge having secured the honour by backing up his opening qualifying performance with another TQ run in the second. The US Truggy Champion once again headed a Kyosho 1-2 at the top the time sheets improving his time by 6 seconds while team-mate Cody King set a new fastest lap time of 44.399 on his way to second.  Defending champion Ty Tessmann again set the third fastest time with his Hot Bodies despite losing 5 seconds with a mistake on lap 3.  Tebo said the extra time came from a combination of him being more settled, better gearing and having got his Maxima fuel released from customs, the World Championship Top Qualifier having borrowed fuel for his Q1 run.  With overall TQ honours sewn up he plans to use the third & final qualifier to test a slightly different set-up on his Orion powered Inferno ST-RR.

Mike Truhe

Mike Truhe described his second qualifier as ‘a lot better’, the Tem Losi driver setting the fourth fastest time.  Only tenth in Q1 after a number of driver errors, he still had one incident losing around 4 seconds on the opening lap. Other than making a small adjustment to the clutch on his N-Vision powered 8ight-T for Q2 he said the truggy is working really well and he just needs to try getting an error free run.  Team-mate Adam Drake and Matt Castellano set the 6th & 7th times respectively.  Drake was happier with the traffic this time round saying it was a much cleaner run while Castellano, the last driver to record 10 laps, said he lost time with a crash on his final lap.

Ryan Cavalieri

For the Team Associated drivers it was a troubled round.  Ryan Cavalieri managed the fifth fastest time but believes he has a radio problem similar to that he experienced at the Neo Race 2 years ago which was later traced to a faulty throttle pot.  Pitting next to the Upgrade RC stand Cavalieri has borrowed one of the radio they are using to display their decal sets and hopes this will put him back in the game in Q3.  Ryan Maifield set the 9th fastest time behind Chad Bradley and ahead of ‘The Car’ designer Joesph Quagraine who is running a Mugen truggy. The Motorama winner is not happy with the Reedy engine he ran in the opening two qualifiers and will switch to the same engine he ran in the final at the World Championships in Thailand last November.

Driver stand

After a strong run in Q1 when he set the 5th fastest time, Mugen’s Dylan Rodriguez was again running a hot pace until he landed on a rock which caused his OS engine to cut.  There are a number of big name drivers here at the ‘The Dirt’ Nitro Challenge who are not part of the truggy action because their team’s don’t have a car.  Team Durango’s Renaud Savoya and Ryan Lutz are looking forward to tomorrow’s buggy action but have kept themselves occupied today by competing in the small field of Short Course trucks with Team Durango’s DESC410R prototype.  European 1:8 Buggy Champion Savoya said the track here is not really suited to the smaller 1:10 trucks.  Making the trip from Portugal former European Champion and JQ Products team driver Miguel Matthias is another not taking part today due to a lack of truggy.  One driver who has access to a Truggy but has opted out of running today preferring instead to use the time to get his nitro and 1:8 electric buggy ready is Mugen team driver Travis Amezcua.
