Tebo sets pace on Day 1

Tebo sets pace on Day 1

Kyosho’s Jared Tebo is the unofficial pace setter at the end of the opening day of the IFMAR 1:8 Off Road World Championships.  The US Champion was fastest from defending World champion Atsushi Hara as he set the only 45 second lap of the day.  Tebo said he focused more on his driving for the second run and was more comfortable with his Orion powered MP9 having changed from super soft to soft AKA Impact tyres.  Describing conditions In P2 as being at an ‘inbetween’ stage he feels conditions should be better tomorrow and based on this will make some small set-up adjustments for his first run in the morning.  Overall it was a strong opening day for the Kyosho team as France’s Jerome Aigoin set the third fastest lap time with a 46.343.  Running AKA City Block on the front and Ibeam on the rear of his Novarossi powered MP9, a switch to the harder ‘soft’ compound in P2 along with a camber change had transformed the car making it much easier to drive.

Tebo sets pace on Day 1

Hara managed a 46.028 despite suffering a flame out but rather than restart the car his pitman had a second car already up and running and ready to go before the first car was returned to the pitlane.  Hara said he had switched engine from this morning and the new unit was too rich which resulted in the flame out.  The Japanese ace said the two D8s had different set-ups but on the track they had a very similar feeling to drive.  Having run Pink Megabytes, the super soft compound, Hot Bodies tyres he plans to test the harder red ‘soft’ compound tomorrow.

Fourth fastest was 2008 finalist Travis Amezcua. The American team Mugen driver said the biggest change he made from P1 was a switch from Prolines Bulldog to the Shift bodyshell which made the car easier and more consistent to drive allowing him to post a best time of 46.609 and end the day as the fastest Mugen driver.  Happy with his Ninja powered MBX-6 which was running on Proline’s M3 Sniper all day he is considering trying the new Revolver pattern tomorrow.

Ryan Maifield

In the Team Associated camp Ryan Maifield was their top dog setting the fifth fastest time with a 46.765.  Running JConcepts tyres on his Reedy powered RC8B, Maifield tried three different patterns in the second run with blue compound Crossbows proving to be the best option.  Running a set-up from back home he said they are working their way back towards the set-up they left with after pre-event testing here in Pattaya due to the fact there is not as much grip as they had expected from the oiling of the track in preparation for the main event.  Tomorrow he plans to start the day on a set yellow compound Sub Cultures.  Associated’s other Ryan, Ryan Cavalieri, found himself over a second off the pace of his team-mate.  Having switched from a 5 to a 3-port Orion engine for P2 he suffered from a sticking carb but he feels even without this issue his set-up was too soft for the fast conditions.

Meen Vejrak

The winner of the Pre-Worlds, local driver Meen Vejrak set the sixth fastest time ahead of Cody King.  Running a 46.824, the Mugen driver switched to lighter oil in the diffs of his Alpha engined MBX-6 which the 25-year-old said made a huge difference.  Running a short wheel base he thinks further time can be found by lengthening it for tomorrow.  Having used Proline’s Sniper in today’s two practices he plans to try Revolver and Eclipse on Day 2.

Mike Truhe and Adam Drake

Completing the Top 10 is 2008 podium finisher Renaud Savoya with a 47.072, new Tamiya signing Lee Martin on 47.159 and the fastest of the Team Losi drivers Yannick Aigoin who managed a best lap of 47.201.  Losi’s Mike Truhe and Adam Drake found themselves outside the Top 10 but both were happier with their second run.  The Top Qualifier at the last World Championships, Truhe said track conditions were much better but he was still fine tuning his 8ight but overall wasn’t too concerned about his early pace.  Drake said he changed his set-up for P2 and plans to continue in the same direction tomorrow planning further changes for the second of tomorrow’s two scheduled runs.  Although not super fast, the changes to his Novarossi powered 8ight made for an easier to drive car and he his happy to start Day 2 from this footing.

Tomorrow’s schedule is made up of a further two untimed practice session that will give each driver a 5-minute Warm-up followed by a 10-minute run.

New in the pits – Part 2

New in the pits - Part 2

Continuing on with finding new stuff in the bits, we sat down with World Champion Atsushi Hara, who showed us his new self developed cab forward body shell. He has test this new body extensively and found it to have lots of downforce, thanks to not only the front cab, but the ridges going up the side of the cab as well as the rear winglets. This space behind the cab allows cleaner air to reach the wing for better balance, which he has found using one from another manufacturer. The body is expected to be released next month.

New in the pits - Part 2

Also new is the fact that Hara is no longer a contracted Pro-Line driver, something both parties agreed to. This enables him to use whatever tire is best for the specific track conditions, which for this race, he believes the HB tires will work best for him.

New in the pits - Part 2

Jason Ruona from JConcepts gave us a run down of the many new products that the Florida based company has brought with them for this event. As well as their new Inverse buggy wheel which we covered last month, they have their new Punisher rear wing. A flat deck, high-support design is matched with 4 different interchangeable side dams for increased tuning options. JConcepts also have a prototype of their Punisher RC8B fin body which helps increase high-speed stability, especially suited for this track with its high speed straight/sweeper.

New in the pits - Part 2

Jason has also brought two new tires with him for this event, the Hybrids and the 3Ds. The former are a combination of the most popular JC tires available. A mid-lug design with inner Crowbar centre lug, these tires are built for speed and high-speed control & handling. The 3ds are developed to be the ultimate Slick-groove tire, and combine the stability of a black groove bar tire with flexible pattern of finely spaced Double Dee lugs in one package.

New in the Pits – Part 1

New in the Pits - Part 1

Team Associated are here with a big and experienced team and we took a look at Ryan Maifield’s car to see what the US company brought to the race in terms of equipment. To protect the shock ends they have removed the lower shock riser and placed them into modified wishbones. As this would affect the shock angle, they have produced new front and rear shock towers with different mounting holes.

Other changes on the car included a new longer chassis plate that allows the rear uprights to be moved more forward for more dogbone swing. The rear chassis brace has also been beefed up with a carbon fibre insert running along its entire length. Maifield has also chosen to run the old steering configuration used in the original RC8, which gives the car a more twitchy feel, an idea from their Spanish team mate Robert Batlle who has been running this setup for a while.

New in the Pits - Part 1

For Losi, apart from the chassis plate with steel inserts front and rear that we showed you previously, they have very little changes to the car. The made update is the new aluminium shock spring cups which are made from aluminium, that wont be affected by the heat, are stronger and sport a taller inside collar to prevent the spring from popping out. This part is held onto the shock shaft with a set screw.

New in the Pits - Part 1

Losi also have a new fuel tank that is 7cc bigger thanks to a new process that they use to bring the two ends of the tank together. Finally the team drivers are using a new lightweight body that is half the weight of the standard kit version.

New in the Pits - Part 1

Daniel Vega is here with his update Agama chassis, which features some updates including a new 10 degree front caster block, something he has been waiting for, for some time. A big improvement according to the Spanish team driver is the new pivot pin mounts which are no longer captured but held in place with nuts.

New in the Pits - Part 1

A new braking system helps improve the track performance, which now uses a steel disc along with Ferodo type pads. Something Daniel is trying, that we have seen on the car of Mike Truhe, is the replacement of the rear chassis brace with a shock absorber, which he believes will help the cars performance coming off the jumps. The car also has a new carbon radio plate and a number of aluminium option parts throughout including the wheel axles and drive cups.
