Maifield takes ‘Spring Indoor Nationals’ Buggy titles

Ryan Maifield

Ryan Maifield is the JConcepts Spring Indoor Nationals buggy champion, the Team Associated driver wrapping up overall victory in 2WD and 4WD Buggy by backing up his A1 results with two more tone to tone wins in Leg 3 of the triple A-Mains at Mike’s Hobby Shop in Dallas, Texas. Winner of the opening round of the Indoor National Series in St.Louis in February, the Winter Indoor Nationals, Maifield claimed his second win of the five race series with another easy win over TLR’s Dustin Evans although this time round the advantage was a much more slender 3 second gap with Taylor Larsen completing the Top 3 a further 4-seconds adrift.

‘Might have been boring to watch but I don’t like exciting races’ was how Maifield summed up his Leg 2 win. Running no sauce on his tyres for the second encounter to try and make his B4.2 a little less edgy, he said once again it was ‘another clean run’ and ‘luckily’ the others made mistakes acknowledging that Evans had the faster buggy.

Evans

Evans said his chances of victory were greatly diminished by his qualifying result, as starting from third by the time he got passed his TLR team-mate Cody Hollis, Maifield already had a gap that was just too much to pull back. Trying to be a little more patient second time round he said he was ‘coming’ at the end of the race but pushed over the edge resulting in a mistake that cost him any chance of at least trying to force the race to be decided in the third A-Main.

Ryan Maifield

In 4WD Buggy, Maifield’s World class ability saw him breeze to victory as his Associated team-mate Steven Hartson, the only driver with any chance of providing a challenge, broke his B44.2 when he rolled at the end of the straight as he started lap three crashing into the track’s perimeter wall. This left Kyle Skidmore to finish the 5-minute encounter a distant second 2.5 seconds up on the similar Associated of Trevor Nault who completed the Top 3.

Maifield takes A1 in 2WD Buggy

Ryan Maifield

It was a perfect morning for Ryan Maifield at the second round of the JConcepts Indoor National Series with Team Associated completing a clean sweep of the opening A-Mains at the Mike’s Hobby Shop hosted event in Dallas adding wins in 2WD and 4WD Buggy to his earlier Mod Truck A1 win. Top Qualifier for the premiere class, Maifield lead from start to finish takig his B4.2 to an easy win over TLR duo Dustin Evans and Cody Hollis. With the track’s grip levels increasing every run Maifield said conditions for the opening race were difficult with everyone on the edge, the winner of Round 1 of the series himself getting up on two wheels a number of times during the 5-minute encounter. Managing to avoid any major mistakes the Arizona driver was able to take the win by almost 7-seconds but said for the next leg he would change the compound of his JConcepts tyres to try and make his buggy a little less difficult to drive.

Evans 22

Again Evans showed he has the pace to challenge Maifield, his TLR22 setting the fastest lap of the race with a 18.527 compared to Maifield’s best of 18.527. Running second having got passed team-mate Hollis who started 2nd, the 2011 US National Champion was making inroads to the leader but trying to further reduce the gap he ‘pushed too hard’ resulting in a flip over that ended any chance of seeing the two factory drivers go head to head.

Maifield

In 4WD Buggy Maifield was on a complete different level to the rest of the field lapping everyone except his Associated team-mate Steven Hartson. Hartson set the fastest lap of the race but made too many mistakes to be able to mount any challenge to Maifield. Starting from 7th on the grid Kyosho driver Aaron Breuer completed the Top 3.

Maifield wins first Mod Truck encounter

Ryan Maifield

Ryan Maifield kicked of the final day of the JConcepts Spring Indoor Nationals in Dallas, Texas, this morning to take a comfortable win from 3rd on the grid over the battling TLRs of Taylor Larsen and Dustin Evans. Top Qualifier Cody Hollis had a poor race a series of mistakes dropping him back down the order to finish a distant 4th.

Dustin Evans Truck

Summing up his race Maifield said he got ‘lucky’ as Evans was very ‘super fast’ and it was down to him not crashing rather than pace that allowed him to take the win. Happy to take the win the Associated ace said his Reedy powered T4.2 still needs work in order to be able to run with Evans rather than depend on errors. Getting by his team-mate Hollis on Lap 2, Evans’ Orion powered 22T built up a lead setting the fastest lap of the race, an 18.860-sec lap, in the process. However the Team Losi Racing driver’s race would come undone on lap 9. Balked by traffic and losing time as he tried to work his way through slower trucks he said he could see Maifield closing up quickly and ‘lost his head’ resulting in a crash that gave him a 27-second lap and handed Maifield the win. Clearly frustrated by the crash he said he knows he has the truck to get the job done but just needs a little more luck with traffic next time out. Seeing off a late challenge from the recovering Evans, Larsen was delighted to finish 2nd having started 5th on the grid. The 14-year-old said his truck was very easy to drive allowing him to keep his lines and drive a ‘really consistent race’ Hollis was understandably disappointed with his race saying it was ‘just a bad race with too many wrecks’ but with the first race nerves out of the way he is confident of a better performance in Leg 2.

Dustin Stand

In 2WD Short Course Evans took his 22SCT to a tone to tone win over team-mate JR Mitch who at one point looked like me might challenge for the win. Starting from 7th on the grid Hollis completed the Top 3 with the Steven Hartson the best non Losi finisher as he took his Associated SC10.2 to fourth ahead of the battling 14-year-old Daimon Borkowicz and Kyle Skidmore who crossed the line side by side with the young JConcepts/Associated driver getting securing fifth by .053 of a second. For No.2 starter Larsen the race lasted just 4-laps as he popped a ball cup on his truck.
